Samuel Grimes

"Group up, we need to consume fuel. Me, Lori, Carl, Carol, Sophia will take one car. The rest can squeeze in an RV." My father speaks as we gather around cars.

"Ain't leaving my brother's bike behind." Daryl scoffs and walks off to his bike.

"Fair enough." I murmur and move to the RV, getting in and finding myself a spot on the bench seat at the table. Shane slides across from me.

The rest gets in and Dale drives off. Glenn helped him with maps on the passenger seat and the rest of the group chilling on the back. I just play with my fingers or stare out of the window for a while.

"So how army treated you?" Shane breaks the silence after a while.

A lot of stuff happened in the bootcamp. Good and bad. A lot of training, interesting ones, fun ones, but challenging and hard ones too. It wasn't half bad. Could be worse. I thought it was going to be worse. But I never was really sent off to war or anything like that before the disease started. Only after that we all were send over here to protect this facility.

Then the bloody stuff started. They tell you to kill everyone who gets closer than allowed. Diseased or not, just shoot away. Gunshots are loud, screams of people, wounded and turning are louder. One moment someone was shot and other they're getting up and moving towards you again. It was a mess. I didn't sleep for days and when you do you start hallucinating, you start hearing and seeing things that are not there. Like having damn schizophrenia. Ugh.

"It was fine." I say as my hand comes up to play with the ball chain of my dog tags.

"Yeah, I told you it won't be so bad." He swiped his hand under his nose. "Look at the bright side. Now you don't need to serve."

"Yeah, now we need to kill to just survive." I mumble looking out of the window again.

"Hey those things ain't people. Said it yourself, they're like mosquitos. They feed on you and you bash their heads in to prevent it."

"Yeah, right." I nod.

Few days on the road without much food or water, in full time search for fuel and at least small bits to eat. Not a fun time I tell you.

Eventually RV comes to once another stop and we get up moving to the front to see what's up. Highway is blocked with abandoned cars. Daryl on his bike... Er Merle's bike drove away forward and then came back stopping by the window.

"See a way through?" Dale asks and Daryl just nods before turning around and then driving forward again, leaving the way. Dale moves behind him slowly.

"Uh, maybe we should go just back. There's an interstate bypass." Glenn says, staring at the map.

"We can't spare the fuel." Dale cuts in.

We move forward slowly but then something in the RV breaks and white smoke starts streaming up from the front, Dale parks the vehicle with a sigh. We all get out.

"I said it. Didn't I say it? A thousand times. Dead in the water." Dale complains walking over to the hood of the RV.

"Problem Dale?" Shane asks.

"Just a small matter of being stuck in the middle of nowhere with no hope of..." Dale starts complaining as he looks around and notices the open trunk of one of the cars filled with different stuff. "Okay, that was dumb."

"If you can't find a radiator hose here..." Shane shrugs and clocks his tongue.

Daryl walks over and starts roaming through the trunk of the car. "There's a whole bunch of stuff we can find."
