Y/n

I turn and see Kamari, my younger brother airily hiccup next to me. He's knocked out cold. I'm not too far off either, to be honest. The linen on my skin soothed my nerves as we pulled up to the house in Freeridge, our new house. A house with no weight, no memories, no trauma, a fresh start. I know that's not entirely true, but the reality about my stepdad was the last thing I want to think about now. Fuck Lamar, me and Kamari have been through enough this year.

I pick the little boy up from his old ass booster chair, which reminds me I really need to get him a new one. Gently so as not to wake him up, I scrambled through my handbag to find my keys.  The cold touch of the metal finds my hand after a few frustrating minutes and I kick the door open.

First thing, I put Kamari to bed. Then I kick my sneakers off and strip off my tight ass flared jeans, the zipper being pulled down, giving me a chance to breathe. My bra is the next to go as I jump into my fresh sheets. I'll unpack tomorrow. It's motherfucking 2am. The drive from Santa Barbara was like 4 hours because of traffic. My entire body felt like it was pulsating from the stress of moving and life in general. But I have to keep it together. me and Kamari are all I have. My 11-month-old brother is my only priority in the world im going to go hell and back to provide for him.

I let out the breath I didn't even know I was holding. I'm fine at least I got aunt Geny, Abuelita and Ruby now. They don't even know I'm in town yet. I'm guessing they already know what happened, but I still don't know how I'm going to explain it to all of them. God... I haven't seen Ruby in so long. I miss him so much. The little fuck must be starting high school round about now. Maybe he hit a growth spurt aaaa I can't wait to see everyone. Wait shit.

I need to start school again as well, fucking perfect if I don't have enough to do. It's senior year. I guess it's the final year I'm just going to have to thug it out.

Setting my alarm for 7:00 am, I finally let myself drift to sleep, shoving my stupid overthinking thoughts to the back of my head. I deserve a good night's sleep.

-------

I'm stood awkwardly at the front door with Tia Geny and Ruby gawking at me, "OH MY GODDD MIJA". Tia Geny was screaming at the top of her lungs.

"What's going on..." Ruby stepped out, "AAAA Y/N OH MY GOD".  Ruby is practically shrieking in excitement, making me chuckle.  I'm still standing in the doorway holding up my baby brother.

There are two other kids sitting in the living room. One tallish Mexican kid wearing a gray tank top and a lanky black kid wearing a colourful tee. They both look equally confused about my family's hysterics. It's adorable.

I flashed them a lob sided apologetic smile.

"COME IN THENN", Ruby ushered me in, taking my bag from me and making space for me on the couch where the two other boys were sitting. Damn, the taller ones are actually kinda hot. His hair is so pretty. I'm kind of jealous.

I let out a dry kind of awkward chuckle since everyone was now crowded around, looking up at me expectantly. Even the two kids were looking at me like damn I didn't expect to be surrounded like I had secrets to life or something.

"Soo you never hit that growth spurt, huh?" I smirked to Ruby, and finally all that tension was gone, everyone burst into a fit of giggles. Ruby was holding an annoyed deadpan expression though.

        -------

The reunion was full of tears and laughter, most of the tears being from my cousin, of course. No one pressured me to talk about my mom. Thank God for how caring they are. Instead we all focused on my new life.

Fresh Start

We ironed out how I'll start school with Ruby when summers, over, which he was so buzzed about, I couldn't care less, but I'm glad I'll have him with me. Tia was so happy to meet Kamari and said she'd look after him and me whenever I needed. Kamari needs this supportive family dynamic and was blessed there more than happy to provide it. It's definitely taking a weight off my back, since on top of the hundred and one things I need to do, I need to find a job and there's no guarantee I'm going to have enough time for him.

Unfortunately, Tia Genny was trying to convince me to let Lamar into Kamari's life. I know she's right, thats his dad, but it's just unwanted stress for me at the moment.

On a better note, Ruby introduced me to the boys, Cesar and Jamal. The trio seem really close apart from when they made passing references to this girl. Monse I think her name is. They all tensed up at the mention of her, especially Cesar. It seemed like stupid teenage boy stuff, so I decided not to ask about it. I really do like them, and we've all made plans to hang out soon. Perfect I kind of got a friendship group now. Cesar even offered to help me unpack tonight, which I didn't say, but was such a relief there is no way was I carrying all those heavy ass boxes myself.
