Chapter three

Naperville police station, Chicago.
11:00pm

The chief superintendent's office was a lush room with shuttered windows and polished wood tilings; the LED light bulbs illuminated a bright white light, bringing out the simple yet intricate design.

The North and East walls of the room were lined with book shelves filled with books of all kinds. Medals and plaque of achievement and honor sat in a glass showcase, all shining in glorious pride.

Adjacent to it, a dark oak desk sat; neatly arranged files, pens and pencils in a cup and a flag of America decorated it's surface. Behind on the wall was a clock and below a framed picture of Joe Biden, the president of the United States of America.

Sitting behind the desk on a swivel chair was a fat pudgy man with a red wrinkly face and large stubby fingers which drummed on the table nervously. His dark uniform hugged his pig-like body, making him like an overgrown baby in small clothes. In front of him sat the assistant commissioner of police, who was his direct boss. He was much older than him; his salt and pepper cropped hair gave the effect of a man in his late fifties.

They seemed to be involved in calm but yet serious discussion until they were interrupted with a knock. The superintendent of police; a man with sleek gray hair and a little plump stepped in. He was on his usual navy blue uniform, adorned with gleaming epaulets bearing one or two stars, symbolizing their esteemed rank. His cap, adorned with the police force's emblem, sits a top their head while other sleeve badge showcase additional insignia. A silver buckle on a leather belt embarked with the force's logo encircled his waist. He looked smart in his polished black boots too. He had a side bag hung across his chest, holding a file.

"Salutations gentleman_" Mr Eric, the superintendent of police greeted with his deep monotone voice. On noticing the sudden silence from both of them he continued"sorry I must've interrupted something."

Mr Jefferson, the assistant commissioner of police gave him a long stare.
"You're leaving."
"Yes sir, just wanted to drop a file." Eric answered as he walked to the desk; placing the file gently on the table.

"Let me guess, same report of the missing kids." Mr Johansen the chief superintendent of police said.
"Exactly sir, Eric answered. Annie Bernet, twelve years old Asian girl who settles behind the lake side park at Illinois. According to her mother, she was last seen after school on a Friday afternoon."

"This is getting serious." Jefferson said.
Eric nodded. "Many posters of missing kids are all over the city, parents troop into the station all day crying and cursing."
A minute of silence fell in the office. After which Jefferson huffed and adjusted himself on the swivel chair saying"Alright, the patrol team from my headquarters will be sent."

"I've also been aware of this issue lately but I didn't know it was this serious though." Johansen said with his right arm on his chin.

"It is sir, and surprisingly it's all over half of Naperville."
"Are they same reports from other cities?." Jefferson asked.
Eric shrugged." Not really, or not yet though."

"Alright then, head on home to your family Eric, I'll take it from there."

***
The cool evening breeze swept past Lauren. She was seated on the beach in the school field watching Eddie's after school football practice with his team.

The sun seemed kind today and wasn't too hot, unlike the summer sun, although summer was till a long way off.
Few students were seen either on the bench in the school field relaxing or hanging around quietly.

The football players all looked feisty and skillful. You could sense their feeling of passion and determination towards the game through every move. Eddie was a pathetic player and was mostly on bench in all the games but his love for football was enough encouragement for him.

Of course every game had a star player. Brandon. The popular, charming football star of Crest land high. He was tall, brown, full chested, appealing and marvellously skillful. His seductive red lips makes every girl flutter.

Back to Lauren, she was stated quietly on the bench playing with her fingers. She seemed to be alone in her row. She would always stay back every Wednesday after school for Eddie's football practice and after the game, Sandy might show up to pick her up but if she didn't, she would join Eddie on his bicycle and ride home together. It had always been that way.

Lauren's life was revolving in a circle with events, moments, emotions, and people repeating over again. Would there ever be a change in her life. How she yearned for that day so bad.

Just then, a boy walked past her. His delightful fragrance caught her off guards. She felt an instant spark of attraction. The fragrance wafted up, transporting her to a place of warmth and comfort. Her heart skipped a bit and her pulse quickened so lightly.

There was a sudden pause in time as the figure of the boy also paused before her. Tall, fit, dazzling dark pupils, magnificent curly hair and shimmering brown skin. Damn. Her eyes widened in amazement. He had an attractive, well proportioned and imposing appearance suggestive of heart and strength.

She felt a sudden flutter in her chest, like a butterfly awakening from a slumber. Waves of electricity were running through her body. She was pinned down with an abrupt euphoric sensual feeling. This Prince charming was Douglas.

Suddenly, this amazing view was interrupted by a loud shout from one of the players. She turned to the peach and found Eddie layed helplessly on the ground. He was quickly rushed to the school clinic as Lauren ran after him. He groaned in pains. Lauren was quivering in fear like she was the one being hurt.

"Oh my God, what happened to you?!."
"Weren't you watching, Brandon broke my arm!." Eddie managed to answer and groaned loudly on the medical bed. Lauren was speechless. She just stared at Eddie in shock and confusion.

The clinic was a small room with just three medical bed and few medical appliances that was enough to deal with a little medical emergency.
"Young lady, you have to leave." A young female nurse interrupted firmly.
"A minute_"she said to the nurse and quickly held onto Eddie's uninjured arm tightly. The one without a bruise. She stuttered admist sobbing _"I'm...... I'm so sorry...._" she tried to speak but words couldn't just fit in.

"Hey go home kid, school's out." The nurse yelled out angrily.
_"But you'll..... you'll make it to school tomorrow right?." Lauren asked shakily.
"I.... I don't know." Eddie answered helplessly.

Suddenly, the nurse grabbed Lauren by her shoulders out and slammed the door before her. She just froze before the clinic in deep rueful thoughts.
Gosh, what just happened
No this isn't real
Eddie won't be coming to school till he's fine
I'll be left alone
No I can't stay without him
I'll be fuckin lonely
Gosh, wish this didn't ever happen.

She felt a sharp touch on her shoulder as she jerked back to reality. She turned over to find a short man probably in his late 40's. It was the school janitor. He was on his usual blue kaki over all, holding a bucket with a mop stick stuck inside.

He was giving her a perplexed look as he asked."Are......are you okay?."
Lauren glared at him for a while and answered."Yeah, yeah I'm fine."

Stealthily, she walked outside and found Sandy in front of the school leaning on her usual old Corolla.
