It was two weeks before Valentine's Day, and for all the couples at Sam's school, excitement was in the air. Sam unfortunately wasn't so lucky, as his former girlfriend had moved away. Valentine's Day was always a soft subject for Sam and often made him think of Valerie. "I wonder what Valerie is doing", Sam thought to himself. As he reached for his phone, he became hesitant about messaging her. Just then Sam's best friend Paige walked into his room, "hi Sam, how's it going?", she asked. Sam shot a sad look over at Paige and pointed to the calendar. "I just can't stop thinking about Valerie", Sam said while holding back tears. "Valerie was so perfect to me, we used to do everything together and I miss her so much", Sam reminisced.
Paige walked over to Sam and embraced him tightly. "It'll get better Sam, I know it's hard right now, but you'll find someone, I know you will", Paige reassured him. As Sam walked downstairs, he decided to try and call Valerie, on the fourth ring Sam's heart hit the bottom of his stomach when a male's voice was on the other end followed by Valerie's voice. As Paige was following Sam down the stairs, she noticed that Sam had just crumbled and raced down to him. "Oh my gosh, Sam are you okay", she asked concerned. Sam couldn't muster up the courage to say anything except just cried in Paige's arms.
Once Sam had calmed down, he said "I called Valerie to let her know that I still miss her and am thinking about her, but instead of Valerie, it was a new guy". Paige couldn't believe what Sam was telling her, all Paige could do was hold Sam close and reassure him that everything will be okay.
The next day at school, Sam walked through the halls and observed all the couples walking in the hallway to their classes. "Why can't that be me, he whispered to himself"?
Just then Paige spotted Sam and ran up to him, "what's up Sam?", she asked. Sam held his head down and expressed the sadness of Valerie moving on without telling him that the relationship was over, without saying anything else Paige walked Sam to their first class with her arm around his shoulder. As Sam walked in the classroom, his phone vibrated in his pocket, he was reluctant to check it but decided he'd look to see what it was. It was Valerie that texted him, without missing a beat, Sam put his phone on do not disturb and took his seat.
Lunch hour soon approached, and it was going to be as busy as any other day, the smell of cinnamon buns filled the air. The doors to the lunchroom opened and Sam walked in to seek the comfort of Paige, but she hadn't gotten to the lunchroom yet. Sam got in line to buy lunch when Paige spotted him and ran up behind him, as she tapped him on the shoulder, he turned around and smiled instantly. "It's really good to see you smile Sam", as she hugged him. "Well Paige, seeming as though this is rock bottom, there's nowhere to go but up", exclaimed Sam. Paige looked at Sam and said, "you don't have to hide how you feel in front of me Sam", Paige said. As Sam and Paige took their seats at a nearby lunch table, Paige fell into a deep thought, you see Paige wanted to ask Sam out but was torn because Sam was going through a lot at this moment in time.
As home time fast approached, Sam remembered the school dance that was coming up and couldn't help but think about how he used to go with Valerie.
