His lips were soft as they pressed against mine gently. Although we were kissing, it was as if he was struggling to hold himself back. Like he was trying his very best not to cross a line.
I felt every second of it. And when he pulled away, it felt like I was fading from some sort of high. Slowly opening my eyes, I leaned forward to maintain the former distance that he was now threatening to expand.
"Finnick?" I look up at him from under my lashes, the way I'd seen so many actresses in romance movies do with their lovely doe eyes. That appeared to halt his retreat, at least temporarily.
"You said you wanted me to escape the Games with you. Is that true?" I asked.
Shakily, he answered, "Yes."
I began to lean in for another kiss. "Then let's leave the Districts together, afterwards..."
"No." He shifted away from me, avoiding my gaze. "I can't."
"You can love more than one person at the same time," I pleaded convincingly.
I could feel myself slipping into desperation. Pathetic desperation for him to stay with me. To choose me. To love me.
Getting off from the couch, he shook his head. "No, I don't. I don't love you. It isn't like that."
As much as those words should have pained me, they didn't hurt at all. Finnick was a terrible liar. Especially when he was lying to himself. It was as clear as day that he was trying to dissuade himself, the same way I did, that his feelings weren't real.
"Then why did you kiss me?"
Finnick stood there silently, with his back facing toward me.
"It was a mistake." His voice was suddenly grave. "I shouldn't have done this to Annie."
Everything around me went still. I barely saw him walk away to his room. All I heard were those last words. Not a trace of doubt was found in any syllable of what he'd said. That was completely and utterly genuine.
Oh how pathetic I felt. Sitting alone on that couch like I did on that night we got evicted. Except back then, I was filled with regret and self-hatred for my naivety. This time, it was heartbreak and renewed fiery hatred towards the man, who'd kissed me only moments ago, for choosing another woman over me.
