I was sitting in my study when I heard a knock. I turned to find Ammi standing at the door.
“Can I come in?”, she asked.
“ Yes, why not? There is no need for my validation”, I said while closing my files.
She came in and sat in front of me on the chair.
“Are you done with your packing?”, she asked.
“Yes I am done”, I said.
“Are you sure about this?”, she asked, her eyes questioning.
“Sure about what Ammi?”, I asked.
“Are you sure about leaving Aira over here and not taking her with you?”, she asked.
“Ammi I had already told you all about it. There is no need for you to ask me again”, I said, opening my files pretending to work to avoid the conversation.
“Did you even ask her if she was willing to go with you?”Ammi asked.
“There is no need for me to ask her. I won't do things based on her choices”, I said, flipping the pages of the file randomly, not even focusing.
“How long will you avoid this conversation, Zayan?”Ammi asked. I closed my file and looked at her.
“Ammi if you know that I am avoiding it then don't talk to me about it please”, I said.
“I don't know you, Zayan. You aren't my son. My son never used to avoid anything, whether it be the world's most difficult or the most easiest. So then why are you avoiding it now?”Ammi said.
“I am not avoiding it, I just don't want to talk about her”, I said.
“Why? Just because she was clueless that she would marry you? Just because she is well-behaved? Just because she is much better than her cousin sister? Or just because she obeys you like a fool?”Ammi said, her anger bursting.
“Because she isn't the one I love”, I said finally, my frustration on its peak.
“I don't love her. I love someone else. I hated the moment when she was being married to me. I hated the moment when she came into my life. I despise the moment when I had to call her my wife when she isn't what I wanted”, I said frustration evident in my tone.
“Who did you want then?”Ammi said, her eyes filled with tears.
“Leave it Ammi, it's all in the past”, I said, controlling myself.
“Now that you have brought up love let me tell you something. You'll regret it if she leaves you. You'll regret every moment of your life if you aren't able to realize things in one year”, Ammi said, confusing me.
“What are you trying to say Ammi?”I asked, being totally confused.
“ It's not my place to tell you that. You have to do it on your own. Let me tell you something, I don't want to lose her by any means whether you like it or not. I hope you won't regret what you're doing”, Ammi said and then went out.
