Chapter 4

"Unfortunately the police haven't given me any updates yet. It has been devastating for me as well."

"Stay safe, my dear"

Karina sighed.
"I will, thank you. Uhm.. I'm sorry to cut the conversation short but I have an exam I need to study for on Monday."

"Okay honey, you should get back to studying. I'm cooking right now anyway since I haven't been able to for awhile."

"See you, Aeyong Eomeoni."
[beep]

After Karina returned and sat to continue her breakfast, Winter spoke before she could start any other conversation."Hey, sorry I overheard your conversation on accident. Why did you lie about the exam on Monday?"

She had kind of unintentionally listened in on the whole conversation too many thoughts and questions popping up in her head.

Who was Seojoon anyway? She tried to brush it off but decided to ask about it as a way to get at least some of the clouds out of her mind.

"Oh.. I just didn't want to talk with her that much you know? Or else the conversation would've taken ages"

She was kind of nervous to respond as she hadn't really expected Winter to listen in and therefore hadn't thought of a proper excuse.
It was showing.
"Who was that anyway?"
Karina was on edge.

Stop asking. was the only thing that was repeating in her head over and over.

"Aeyong Eomeoni, my exes mom."

Winter was confused. The last time Karina was in a relationship was like over half a year or something ago and they had broken up pretty quickly, hence the amount of school gossip at the time. That was Kwan though, not Seojoon. Maybe she just hid her next relationship ? Whatever.

"Why are you still in contact with his mom if he's your ex?" she asked kind of hastily, she had a bad gut feeling.

Karina was tense, and it somehow showed through her eyes more than the rest of any of her micro-gestures, including her trembling hands. She felt like she was being interrogated and she always got uncomfortable in atmospheres like this. After uttering the words
"I- I don't want to talk about it"

She quickly ran and locked herself in her bedroom, using every ounce of her energy to not burst into tears. She couldn't explain what Seojoon had done to her.

Winter ran after Karina, irritated at herself for prying so much into a seemingly sensitive topic for her. She lightly knocked on the door, asking to get in . No response.

"You don't have to explain anything, just please, know that I won't judge you."

A deafening silence, accompanied by the sound of the water drops banging on the windows filled the entire apartment before a click, the door unlocking, interrupted it.

The door opened and as Winter saw Karina's glassy eyes, her first instinct was to hug her, delicately whispering "It'll be okay" into her ear while rubbing her hands on her back. Her curiosity had hurt who she loved and she felt horrible for it. Pulling away from the hug, she placed one hand on Karina's shoulder,lightly rubbing her thumb, the other fixing her hair and gently wiping away her tears while looking at her beautiful face.
