They had once been each other's everything.

When Paige had died, it had taken Tala a long time to forgive Derek. To forgive him for what he'd done to their friend.

But there had always been something between the two. Something that would pull them back together for years to come, even if they didn't know it.

Some would call it fate. Young Tala would call it–

"Stupid," she groaned, her hands over her face. "Stupid, stupid, stupid."

Peter sighed, not looking up from his book.

"Look, if you like him, you should just tell him–" he said monotonously.

"I don't like him," Tala scolded, pulling her hands away just to glare at Peter. "He killed one of my best friends–whom he dated, by the way."

"First off, he didn't kill her," Peter said, looking up over his book. "That alpha did. And secondly, what's wrong with that? Girl code? Can't date your girls' ex man?"

Tala rolled her eyes. "Not that I want to date him, but yes. That is how girl code works."

Peter slammed his book down on the table. "Girl code is stupid. And I can tell you're lying to me."

"I am not!" she snarked.

"Are too," he responded.

"Am not–"

"What are you two arguing about now?" that cocky voice called out, sitting down next to Tala.

"Oh nothing!" she dismissed, smiling at Derek. "Just friendly banter."

"Sure," Peter rolled his eyes, lifting his book again.

Derek smiled, turning to Tala. "So, you still going to that movie today?"

"Duh," Tala said. "Wouldn't miss it."

Derek smiled. "Mind if I join?"

"I would, actually," she teased.

"Oh yeah?" he responded. "And why is that?"

"Oh, I dunno–"

"Get a room!" Peter scolded, standing up from the table and beginning to walk away from them.

The two young teenagers' faces exploded with embarrassment. They tried to look away from each other, both wondering what the other was thinking.

"Well, you could come to the movie with me," Tala said. "I suppose."

"Great," Derek said. "I'll meet you there."

Tala grinned, looking up at her friend.

She had since forgiven him for what had happened to Paige, but there was still a part of her that felt that he was off limits to her. She frowned.

"I'll see you later," she said, quickly standing up and grabbing her bag.

"O-okay?" Derek said, watching as Tala turned to go, walking the complete opposite direction of her next class.
