The sun was dipping below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of gold and crimson, as Junhui stood by the edge of the lake. He had always found solace in the quiet beauty of nature, yet today, the picturesque landscape felt hollow. His thoughts were miles away, where his heart truly resided. Minghao. The name alone brought a sharp pang to his chest, a bittersweet reminder of what he had lost.
Junhui took a shaky breath, willing his eyes to stay dry. The wind rustled the leaves gently, as if nature itself was trying to soothe his pain. He was about to blink away the stubborn tears when his gaze caught a figure standing a little way off. His heart stuttered, then pounded so violently he feared it might burst. That silhouette, the way the setting sun framed the figure in light—it was too familiar to be real.
“Minghao,” he whispered, the name leaving his lips like a prayer.
He wanted to run, to close the distance between them, but his legs felt like lead. His mind screamed that this was a mirage, a cruel trick of the light, yet his heart knew better. As he stumbled forward, disbelief clouding his senses, Minghao turned.
And then Junhui felt the solid impact of a fist against his shoulder, almost sending him reeling. He looked up, eyes wide. Minghao stood there, breathing heavily, eyes glistening with unshed tears, yet his stance was as steady as ever. Junhui winced at the playful pain radiating from his shoulder. Minghao always had been strong for an omega, strong enough to match Junhui’s alphas strength.
“Are you—are you my Mi—” Junhui’s voice broke, unable to finish the sentence. The fear of it being a dream, of Minghao disappearing like mist, rooted him in place.
Before he could utter another word, Minghao surged forward, capturing Junhui’s lips in a kiss that was as fierce as it was desperate. It was a kiss that spoke of lost time, of yearning that had festered too long, and the undeniable truth of a love that had never died. Junhui’s eyes slipped shut, tears mingling with the passion of the moment as they slid down his cheeks. He could taste the saltiness of their mingled sorrow and relief.
It was real. Minghao was real.
Junhui’s arms encircled Minghao’s waist, pulling him close, almost lifting him off the ground in his need to hold him, to never let go again. Minghao’s arms snaked around Junhui’s neck, fingers tangling in his hair, grounding them both in the moment. They pulled away, breathless, foreheads resting together as their hearts beat in time.
Junhui whispered, voice trembling, “I spent every day missing you, Hao. I felt like I was living in a world without colour, waiting for the day you’d come back and paint it all over again.”
Minghao’s eyes glistened with a mix of tears and the soft glow of the sunset. “I thought I'd lost you forever. But even when we were apart, I could still feel you here,” he placed a hand over his heart, “every heartbeat whispered your name, Jun. I couldn’t forget you, not even for a moment.”
Junhui tightened his hold, voice barely a murmur against Minghao’s lips. “We’ve wasted so much time. I don’t want to lose another second. From now on, let’s write a story that no one can tear apart, not even fate.”
Minghao nodded, his own tears finally breaking free. “I’m yours, Junhui. Always have been, always will be. No more running, no more hiding. Let’s build a future where every moment is ours, where every dream is shared.”
Junhui felt a rush of joy so intense it almost made him dizzy. “Together,” he vowed, sealing the promise with another kiss, “from this day until our last, my heart beats only for you.”
