3 days

That is how many days had gone by ever since that owl had shown up and dropped the letter off. Within those 3 days the house had only seemed to grow more and more with these letters. Before we knew it dozens of those owls surrounded the house dropping letters in through any entrance they could. Every hour and every minute not a second missed where those owls aren't dropping mail in. Father was growing furious everytime a new letter showed up, he was running out of places to bin them. He had filled up four whole trash bags this morning with letters. Sadly out of his luck the rubbish men only come on Wednesdays.

This morning when I woke up, I tried to have a bowl of cereal but instead of cereal that poured out into my bowl, shredded mail did. Those bloody letters. I groaned in annoyance as the letter bits floated around in my bowl. "Mum, I can't even have a bowl of cereal without these letters popping in!" I shouted as I dumped the bits into the bin. This 'prank' or whatever it was is SERIOUSLY getting out of hand. "Father, can't you just tell them that their joke isn't funny anymore? That we are done with their pranks?" I said loudly to father as he hammered the mail entrance closed.

"Don't you think I have tried that Kasseya?" father said with an annoyed tisk. I shrugged my shoulders at him. "Maybe this Hogwarts school is real and they do need me" I teased my father.

That 'joke' sure did seem to strike some type of cord in him because the next thing I knew he was throwing the hammer down hard at the ground facing me with fuming eyes. "There is NO Hogwarts school!" father projected "They DON'T need you! This is all some stupid bloody joke that isn't funny!" Father turned to the door and kicked it.

Furrowing my brows as fear washed over my face at his sudden outburst. I took a few steps back just to make sure I was somewhat out of 'kick range'. "Kasseya go upstairs, I am frustrated with you and don't want to see you." father spat through his gritted teeth.

"What? What have I done?" confusion rushed over me due to the fact I hadn't done anything, all I did was make a silly joke. "GO!" father shouted at me. With quick feet, I ran up the stairs and into my room locking it. Fathers outburst have seemed to be getting worse and worse each day as new letters come in.

I was slightly terrified of him. No, Not even slightly. I was terrified. Stepping toward the window as I looked out, I saw many owls all surrounding the house. The owls varied from all different ranges of colors, sizes, lengths, and more. They truthfully were beautiful creatures. I didn't mind them at all, I loved them. The only thing that was frustrating was the mail being everywhere.

Every inch of the house decked out in the same piece of mail that read 'Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.' I tried multiple times to sneak on mothers computer and look that school up. But nothing ever came up. It was like this so-called "school" existed in another world? A magical world.

Mum and Dad seemed to be pretty present with me and Aspen's life ever since I'd received that letter. Don't get me wrong, It was nice having them being here finally for once. But part of me wished they weren't here. Aspen had started sleeping in my room during these past few nights due to my father.

He had seemed to pick drinking back up which was never a good sign. I don't think he would ever hurt Aspen physically, or so I hoped. Mum had been distancing herself more too, locking herself up in her room and not coming out for hours. Father is a scary lunatic while mother is just gone? They aren't allowing us to go outside near anyone or anything. Father had gone so paranoid that he cut the wires to the telly.

We are prisoners in our own home. There was nothing to do in this house. All there was to do was sleep. Exhaustion washed over me as my mind raced. Rubbing my eyes I made my way over to my bed pulling the covers over me as i drifted off.

I awoke from my slumber, shooting up as sweat beads threatened to roll down my face. Scanning around my room, I am eager to see what awoke me from my late-afternoon slumber.

I was met with Aspen staring at me, his face was stained with tears as he locked the door. Throwing myself out of bed my feet stumbled as they met with the stone cold floorboards. "What? What's wrong Asp?" fear laced my tone as I ran over to him. Aspen met me halfway as he wrapped his arms around me. Stuffing his head into the crook of my neck as he released sobs. Squeezing him hard as I wrapped my arms around him. My heart ached at the sound of his sobs.

Running my hand up and down his back "what happened asp" I spoke smoothly to him. Aspen pulls back slightly as he stares at my face for a moment then drops his gaze to the floor, tears stream down his face as he whispers "he hit me.." his voice barely audible as he speaks. cupping his face with my hands, each palm pressed lightly into his cheeks. "I can't hear you, what happened?"

his eyes refusing to meet mine "he hit me Kasseya.." a trail of sobs leaving his lips as he confessed what happened. I felt an immediate anger rise in me "he what." I spat angrily as my arms quickly dropped to my sides. I felt my body start to twitch with anger as I saw Aspen cry. Angry thoughts ran through my mind, I wanted to make him hurt the way he made Aspen hurt. Seeing the red slash across Aspen's cheek only caused my anger to grow quickly. His hand made a print on my brother.

Slamming my door open as I glided down the staircase, pushing anything that was in my way aside. There he was. Sitting lazily on the couch as cases of alcohol surrounded him. He swayed his head side to side as he took another swig from his drink, not paying any attention to me. Marching my way over to him, I kicked his empty bottles aside. "You hit him! You hit Aspen?!" I spat as venom dripped from my tongue. His eyes flashed with anger at the sound of my tone, he stood up stumbling to the side a bit but finding his balance.

"Oh calm yourself, he was being a prick." he scoffed "now stop your bitching" he rolled his eyes as he finished. A storm of thoughts swirled in my mind, each one stroking the fire of my anger until it became an inferno. With clenched fists, a tight jaw I felt all my muscles go stiff. Every point in my body was fuming with rage.

"He is just a boy!" Inching closer to him as I spoke "and you! are nothing but a useless man!" I spat. My father raised his hand high in the air and quickly drew it close to my face.

The slap echoed through the room, a sharp crack that left a red imprint on the side of my cheek, my head snapping to the side from the force. I stumbled back from the force, my feet tangling beneath me as I flailed my arms, trying to regain balance. "You evil little witch!" he nastily spat out.
Fear washed over me as I clutched my face trying anyway I possibly could to soothe the pain. Tears began to stream down my face, glistening like tiny rivers in the dim light, my shoulders shaking with each sob that escaped my lips. I dashed to my room, my footsteps pounding against the floor as I flew past the hallway in a blur of motion. As I opened the door, I saw Aspen huddled in the corner, wide-eyed and trembling, the shadows playing tricks on his frightened face.

I opened my arms and called for Aspen through muffled sobs. I wrapped my arms around him, pulling him close in a warm embrace. I felt his tears begin to stain my neck as he started to sob. "Im okay asp, I promise im okay" i lied straight through my teeth as i assured him. "I'm scared," Aspen confessed as he sobbed. Holding him as our trembling and sobbing bodies connected, "don't be scared, we are okay I promise. I promise I will keep you safe" as those words swept past my lips, I now vowed to never break those words.
