Maeve
Sitting in Luna's room, a heavy silence enveloped us as we both processed the recent events. Guilt weighed heavily on both of us. Luna's guilt stemmed from believing Sebastian's lies, while I felt guilty for not recognizing the manipulation sooner. Amidst this turmoil, there was a silver lining - I had acquired new languages through my interactions with Carolina. Despite her actions, I found it within me to forgive her, especially considering the tragic end she had met.
Luna sat down beside me, her hand offering a touch of comfort. But my words were abrupt and sharp, "We should break up."
Luna's eyes widened in shock. "What?" she asked, clearly caught off guard.
"I can't keep risking everything. Carolina's death is on us, and I can't bear the thought of losing you too," I explained, my voice heavy with the weight of my decision.
Luna's disbelief was palpable. "So, your solution is to break up?"
"Yes, I don't want people to die because of us anymore..." I affirmed, my resolve steady. "I believe it's the best way forward."
"You don't mean that, Maeve. You're just upset right now," Luna countered, her tone pleading.
"I do mean it," I insisted. "The trust is shattered because you believed Sebastian over me."
"But I saw you kissing Carolina," Luna's voice trembled with hurt. "And you lied about your late-night activities."
"I lied to help her, not because I was doing something wrong."
"We both made mistakes. Can't we work through this?" Luna's plea was tinged with desperation.
"We can, but I still think a break is needed," I stated, my voice steady.
"No," Luna responded defiantly.
"Luna..." I started, but she cut me off by drawing me close and kissing me.
"I can't imagine my life without you," she confessed, her emotions laid bare.
"We can still see each other. There's a battle approaching, and we're leaving for our trip tomorrow. We won't have time for love," I explained, a tinge of regret in my words.
"I hate you for that," Luna retorted, her emotions raw.
"I'm sorry, Luna. But I'm making this choice to keep you safe," I reasoned, gently removing her arms from around me.
As I retreated to my room to prepare for our journey, emotions surged within me. Tears welled up as I packed, my heart heavy with the weight of my decision. Despite the pain and regret, I knew deep down that it was the right choice – a difficult step towards safeguarding both Luna and me. In the midst of the tumultuous emotions surrounding my decision to part ways with Luna, another farewell weighed on my heart – that of my mother. I approached her, conveying my goodbyes on the day after my conversation with Luna in her room. It seemed that Luna had already left the room earlier, leaving a sense of emptiness in the air.
Outside, the castle was a flurry of activity as preparations for the upcoming battle were underway. The tension and the sense of finality were palpable as warriors and soldiers bid each other farewell. I made my way to a space where I spotted Sebastian. As I drew closer, two guards stood in my path, a barrier that was only lifted when he waved them aside upon recognizing me.
"I want to join the battle," I announced.
"You?" Sebastian's skepticism was evident.
"I want to test myself. Believe me, this has nothing to do with you," I asserted.
