Sage entered her room, the weight of the day pressing down on her shoulders. The soft click of the door closing behind her seemed to release a fraction of the tension that had built up over the long hours. She dropped her bag on the floor and peeled off her tactical gear, exchanging it for the simplicity of her underwear and a plain white T-shirt. Comfort was a rare luxury, and tonight, she intended to savor it.
In the bathroom, Sage stared at her reflection, noting the weariness in her eyes. She sighed, reaching for her toothbrush. The routine of brushing her teeth felt oddly soothing, a small anchor in the chaos of her life. She allowed herself a moment of quiet, letting the hum of the electric toothbrush drown out the thoughts of the day's missions, the injuries healed, and the decisions made.
As she rinsed her mouth and dried her face, a familiar sound echoed through her room—the distinctive ring of her laptop. Someone was calling. She felt a flutter in her chest, a mixture of excitement and longing. It could only be one person.
Sage hurried to her laptop and accepted the video call. The screen flickered to life, revealing the face of her fiancé, (Y/n). His smile was a beacon of light in the dimly lit room.
"Hey," he said, his voice crackling slightly through the connection. "Long day?"
Sage smiled back, her heart lifting. "You have no idea. How are you? Where are you now?"
(Y/n) leaned closer to the camera, the background behind him a blur of unfamiliar terrain. "Still out in the field. Can't really get into the details, but you know that. What I can tell you is that there is an Eiffel Tower around."
She nodded, "So, you're somewhere in France." The distance between them feeling both vast and insignificant. "I miss you."
"I miss you too," he replied, his eyes softening. "Tell me about your day. How many times did Phoenix get shot?"
Sage laughed softly, the sound easing some of the tension. As Sage listened to (Y/n)'s voice, her mind drifted back to the beginning of their story. The first time they met was during a critical mission when the Protocol was newly assembled. (Y/n) had been their external informant, and due to the urgency of the mission, he was called in to back up a squad near his position. Sage, the squad leader at the time, had been facing overwhelming odds, outnumbered and outgunned. Seeing the circumstances, (Y/n) had every right to turn down their request, but instead of turning their back on them (Y/n) appeared, fearless and determined, diving into the fray to help them. They had met in the blaze of raining bullets, their first eye contact and handshake forged in the heat of battle.
Their missions often brought them together, and over time, they bonded. What started as professional interactions slowly evolved into something deeper. Neither of them could pinpoint when it happened, but one night led to another, and soon they found it impossible to part from each other.
Sage smiled as she recalled their first kiss. It hadn't been a romantic or under the moonlight kind of kiss. Instead, it had happened in the spur of a moment, during a mission where (Y/n) had been recklessly injured, nearly costing him his life. Sage, overwhelmed with worry and anger, had scolded him fiercely. But (Y/n), ever the joker, had taken her scolding lightly, leading to a heated argument. At the peak of their argument, (Y/n) had silenced her by kissing her. Sage had been too dumbfounded to process what had happened. When (Y/n) had tried to apologize, she slammed another kiss onto his lips, this one fueled by passion and relief. Their heated argument had transformed into an adrenaline rush, and the kiss had expressed all their longing, worry, and love.
One of Sage's most cherished memories was when they had been defending a city in Japan, codenamed Split, tasked with protecting Radianites. In the midst of an intense firefight, they found themselves taking cover behind a Radianite box to reload their weapons. It was then that (Y/n) had casually asked, "Hey Sage, do you want to get married?" Sage had been taken aback, thinking he was joking. But (Y/n), in his usual nonchalant manner, had pulled a diamond ring out of his pocket, even as bullets rained around them. Sage, speechless but overjoyed, had burst out, "Yes!"
