The moon hung low over the crumbling buildings of the forgotten part of town, casting a ghostly light over the scene. (Y/n) leaned against the rusty railing of the balcony, the tip of his cigarette glowing faintly in the dim light. The night air was thick and heavy, carrying the faint echoes of a world that had long since moved on. The abandoned part of town was a ghost of its former self, much like the Valorant Protocol, disbanded five years ago after their victory over the enemy.

He exhaled a long plume of smoke, watching it curl and twist in the night air. Inside the apartment, the smell was unbearable. The stench of death had settled into every corner, every surface, and it clung to the air like a dark shadow. Phoenix's body lay sprawled on the floor, a macabre reminder of a past they all thought was behind them.

Fade emerged from the apartment, her hand covering her nose and mouth. She slid the glass door shut behind her, trying to keep the smell at bay. Her eyes were red-rimmed, a mixture of anger and grief burning in them.

"Shit, the smell," she muttered, leaning over the railing beside (Y/n). "I was about to throw up just from it."

(Y/n) nodded, his gaze distant. "It's been more than a week, from the looks of it."

"Why now? Why after all this time?" Fade's voice cracked slightly. "We thought we were done with all this."

(Y/n) took another drag from his cigarette, letting the silence stretch between them. The night was eerily quiet, the usual city sounds absent in this forgotten part of town.

"Someone wanted to send a message," he finally said. "Someone who knew we were still around."

Fade sighed, running a hand through her hair. "It's been five years since the Protocol disbanded. We thought we saved the world, but now..."

"Now one of us is dead," (Y/n) finished for her, his voice low and grim. "We need to figure out who did this and why."

They stood in silence for a moment, the weight of their task settling heavily on their shoulders. The past had come back to haunt them, and they were thrust back into a world they thought they had left behind.

Fade glanced at (Y/n) and frowned. "I thought you didn't smoke."

(Y/n) looked at the cigarette in his hand, a faint smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "I don't. Just trying to use it to block the smell from my nose."

Fade shook her head, a small, bitter laugh escaping her lips. "Well, it's not working."

(Y/n) flicked the cigarette over the railing, watching the ember fall into the darkness below. "No, it's not." He turned to Fade, who was still trying to compose herself, and nodded. "Let's get back inside."

The moment they stepped back into the apartment, the oppressive smell hit them again. (Y/n) ignored it as best as he could, his mind focused on the task at hand. Fade moved toward Phoenix's body, still covering her nose as she knelt beside him.

(Y/n) began to walk around the room, his eyes scanning every detail. The apartment was sparsely furnished, a testament to Phoenix's solitary lifestyle since the disbandment of the Protocol. Empty beer bottles littered the floor, and the place was in disarray.

Fade leaned closer to Phoenix's body, her eyes narrowing as she inspected the wounds. "He didn't die in his sleep," she said, her voice muffled by her hand. "Look at this." She pointed to a cut on Phoenix's chest. "This was made by a knife. Someone stabbed him."

(Y/n) stopped his search and walked over, glancing at the wound. "So, it wasn't natural causes," he muttered. "This was murder."

He resumed his examination of the room, noting the lack of any signs of forced entry. "There's no sign of a struggle, no broken locks or windows," he said. "Whoever did this knew how to pick a lock, or Phoenix let them in."
