Scarlett Alexander is probably one of the most popular girls at Putnam High. And god, was she pretty. She knew from a young age she was pretty, even if sometimes people were saying it because they were attracted to her instead of just thinking she's pretty. Ever since she was 11.
SCARLETT ALEXANDER
⬇The first time it happened, actually, was her 11th birthday. November 16th, 2018.
She was sitting in a chair coloring in a drawing she made, the room dimly lit filled with chatter and laughter. Even though she was doing her own thing, she was still the center of attention. Every present made her smile widely, cheeks flushed with excitement. She noticed a guy leaning against the wall, probably in his twenties. Scarlett didn't recognize him at all, though he seemed to know her. Maybe he was a cousin of hers? Or an uncle? Whatever, he wasn't really doing anything yet it still made her uneasy.
His eyes followed her every move, and when their gazes met, he smiled too wide, too long. Wasn't really a friendly smile.
"Scarlett, right?" he asked, his voice smooth yet something about it sent a shiver down her spine. "Happy birthday."
She didn't say anything, just nodded. The cheerful chatter surrounding her suddenly seemed like it was fading away as he stepped closer. He felt way too close. He was very tall too, looming over her as he reached into his pocket.
"Got you something." he murmured, pulling out a delicate and small object. It was gold, with tiny charms glittering through the dim light. "I saw it and immediately thought of you.."
Scarlett hesitated. The bracelet was nice an all, but there was just something off about this whole thing. Also, who even is he? "Um, thanks.." She muttered, reaching her hand out to take it. His fingers brushed against hers, lingering for a moment too long. She quickly pulled back, the bracelet dangling from her hand.
"You're welcome," he said, his smile stretching in a way that didn't quite reach his eyes. "You're already so beautiful now. I can only imagine how amazing you'll look as you get older. It's a shame I have to wait to see that."
Scarlett forced a smile, not entirely sure about what he meant. "O- Okay.. thanks?" she muttered, hoping that someone would call her over, hoping he would just leave.
But he didn't. Instead, he just kept watching her, that unsettling smile still on his face as she clutched the bracelet tightly in her hand, wishing for the party to be over.
That moment stuck with her, she doesn't try to think about it too much though. It was easier to shove it to the back of her mind where it could just rot, rather than confront it.
As the years went by, Scarlett continued to play the part of the perfect, popular girl. She was on top of the social ladder at Putnam High, always with a bright smile and an effortless grace. But behind the façade, she was struggling with a lot more than just a few bad memories.
When she was younger, Scarlett had always been praised for her beauty and charm. As she entered high school, the compliments increased. The constant attention made her feel like she was always on stage, required to perform and maintain a flawless image. This pressure to be perfect began to weigh heavily on her.
The more people admired her, the more she felt trapped by their expectations. The truth was, the constant need to uphold this façade was exhausting. The disparity between who she was on the outside and who she felt on the inside created a profound sense of isolation.
Her tipping point was freshman year. Her life seemed like a perfect picture on social media, yet behind closed doors, she felt like a fraud. She was struggling with anxiety, battling feelings of inadequacy, and the pressure to keep up appearances became overwhelming. Scarlett felt like she was living a lie, hiding her true self from everyone around her.
Scarlett would lock herself in her room, using a small, sharp object she kept hidden in a drawer. It started with small, hidden cuts. She actually had a routine: cut, clean, conceal. Each mark was a silent scream, a way to cope with the pressure and the emptiness she felt inside. The physical pain was a stark contrast to the emotional numbness, a way to feel something real when everything around her seemed so fake.
Sometimes, when the pressure was too much, she would sit in her room, staring at the bracelet from her 11th birthday. It was a shiny, golden reminder of the day when everything started to change. The bracelet was a cruel twist of fate, a symbol of how something that seemed so innocent and sweet could be connected to so much pain.
When talking to others, Scarlett was the picture of composure. She laughed easily, smiled effortlessly, and engaged in conversations with a genuine-seeming interest. But inside, she was always on edge, worried about keeping her secret, about maintaining the image that everyone loved.
Anyways, if you didn't know, I'm Scarlett.
Gosh, is it weird that I'm writing about myself like this?
