I woke up with the sun streaming through my window, the warm rays coaxing me out of my dreams. Today's the first day of school! Excitement bubbled up inside me, but it was quickly dampened by a nagging thought—Daniel. What's Mom going to think about his black eye?
I hurried through my morning routine, grabbing a piece of toast from the table ready to leave. My mom's stern expression greeted me as soon as I stepped into the kitchen, her eyes narrowed in that way that made my stomach twist.
"What's wrong?" I asked, trying to sound casual, but the nervousness crept into my voice. "And where's Daniel? School starts soon."
"Y/N, are you serious right now?" Mom's voice was sharp, cutting through the morning calm like a knife. She was furious.
My heart sank. Oh no, this has to be about Daniel.
"Did something happen?" I asked, though I already knew the answer. Please don't tell me she knows about the black eye.
Mom's voice trembled with rage as she spoke, "Did you know Daniel has a black eye? Why didn't you stop this? And who the hell did this to him?"
I felt a wave of guilt crash over me. "Mom, please, it's not what you think, alright?"
She folded her arms, clearly not convinced. "Yeah, he told me he fell," she said, her tone skeptical.
"That's exactly what happened, Mom. It was a stupid accident, okay? But he's fine, really," I said, forcing a smile, hoping it would calm her down.
She sighed, her anger softening but not disappearing. "We're going to talk about this later. Now go, before you're late on your first day. Daniel's already left."
"Okay, see you later," I said quickly, eager to escape the tension. I walked out the door, letting out a breath I didn't realize I'd been holding. My heart was still pounding as I hopped on my bike and headed to school, my mind racing.
Why did Daniel have to put me on the spot like that? How was I supposed to know what he told Mom? I shook my head, trying to push the frustration aside. All I wanted was to find Daniel and make sure he was okay.
The wind whipped through my hair as I pedaled faster, determined to reach him before things got worse. Today was supposed to be a fresh start, but it felt like the storm was far from over.

I spotted Daniel in the hallway and rushed over to him, my mind still replaying the tense conversation with Mom this morning.
"Hey there, Danny. Thanks a lot for how Mom greeted me this morning," I said, my voice dripping with sarcasm.
Daniel rolled his eyes, clearly not in the mood. "Yeah, sorry about that. I tried to leave without her noticing, but when she found out, I panicked, alright?"
"Yeah, yeah, whatever," I muttered, walking beside him as we headed to class.
But then Daniel suddenly froze in place, his eyes locked on something—or rather, someone—down the hallway. I followed his gaze and felt my stomach twist when I saw them: the same group from the beach, the ones who had caused all that trouble last night.
They were wearing jackets with a Cobra Kai logo, and my heart sank. Wasn't that the dojo Freddy mentioned? Please, don't let it be the same one.
"Come on, let's get to class before they see us," Daniel whispered urgently, his voice tinged with fear.
"Yeah, let's go," I agreed, and we quickly turned around. But I couldn't resist one last glance over my shoulder.
And that's when our eyes met—Johnny Lawrence, with his piercing blue eyes, staring right at me. He shot me a quick smirk, the kind that made my skin crawl. I responded with a disgusted expression, making it clear I wasn't impressed by his little act.
I hurried after Daniel, my heart racing as we slipped into the classroom. This day was already off to a rough start, and I had a feeling it was only going to get worse. And I was right...

Daniel had asked me to stay after school so we could ride home together, so I found myself sitting on a bench, my Walkman on, watching the soccer tryouts. The sun was starting to dip, casting a warm glow over the field, and I was half-listening to my music, half-watching the players when my eyes landed on him.
Johnny Lawrence, stripped down to just his shorts, his abs on full display. My gaze lingered a little too long before I snapped back to reality, shaking my head in disgust at myself. What was I even thinking?
I shifted my focus, noticing Ali talking to Daniel. They looked so cute together, and when she caught my eye, she flashed me a quick smile. I smiled back, but my attention was quickly drawn back to Johnny's gang, who were exchanging smirks and glances like they were planning something. Are they five?
Then, it happened. One of the boys tripped Daniel, pretending to go for the ball but obviously doing it on purpose. Daniel lost it, leaping at the guy and throwing punches before anyone could react. I froze, my heart racing. What was he thinking?
Daniel stormed off the field, shouting something about the school, and I finally snapped out of my daze. I marched over to Johnny and his gang, my anger boiling over.
"Look who has to step in again," Johnny greeted me with that infuriating smirk.
"Shut it," I shot back, glaring at him. "What the hell is your problem with my brother? Why can't you just leave him alone, huh?"
Johnny raised an eyebrow, clearly enjoying this. "Ooh, I'm so scared. Look, I'm shaking already," he said sarcastically, holding up his hands in mock fear.
I clenched my fists, every muscle in my body screaming to punch him right there, but I forced myself to walk away, needing to find Daniel.
"Is the princess leaving already? But you're so fun to be around," Johnny called after me, his voice dripping with mockery.
I stopped, turning to look at him one last time. Our eyes locked, his blue ones gleaming with mischief. I shook my head, refusing to give him the satisfaction of a response, and walked away, my mind focused on finding Daniel.
What a jerk, I thought bitterly. A hot jerk, but still a jerk.
