"Chelsey!" You shouted at your friend who was in the bathroom of the hotel room you shared. Chelseyyyyyyyy!"
"What do you want?!" She yelled back.
Even though you had just met her yesterday, you knew that despite her words and tone of voice, she was only joking. It was apparent she was a big goofball the second that you met her on the plane.
By some statistical miracle, out of all of the people on the plane, the one who you were seated next to, was her, someone who was joining the same non-profit organization as you.
The organization was called Weatherproof Warriors. The main goal was so help families affected by the destructive nature of storms, especially ones including tornadoes. Relief was provided many ways, such as helping to provide temporary housing for those who lost or have damage to their homes, options such as: hotels; finding people who are willing to take individuals or families into their own home; renting and buying campers that are easy to transport across the state; and even building temporary homes. They also cook and provide meals, provide childcare, and basic first aid help. The other big focus of theirs, is building storm shelters—strong and many in number.
Basically, anything that can be done to help people and their families who are struggling due to storm-related causes.
The need for an organization like this one became apparent last year, when large amounts of devastating storms swept their way across the Midwest, terrorizing the people living there. Millions of dollars of damage, hundreds of lives lost, thousands of people injured— it was simply catastrophic. Something had to be done, so Weatherproof Warriors was created following the storm season last year.
Making the concept of a non-profit is easy enough, but making it is another. They started recruiting by the end of that year to see how many people they could get. Health and Human Service industry workers, especially those in the Helping Professions, were sought out for. Those with an experience of helping others in emotional states due to conflict in their lives were needed.
You were a Social Worker working in Family Support when you got an email from them, looking for workers. Normally, you would just delete that sort of thing, but at a time in your life where you needed a change—something big—you clicked the email and read it.
You remember snorting at it—Weatherproof Warriors: Defending Your Home, One Storm at a Time. What a cheesy slogan.
From there, you kept having dreams about it, and kept encountering signs that seemed to be telling you to do it: "100 fun things to do in Oklahoma" "Feeling Stuck in Your Life?—Just Jump!"
Just jump... just jump...
Do not knowing anyone or anything in Oklahoma, you signed up and bought a plane ticket for March of the following year.
Your family and friends thought you were crazy, not quite trying to stop you from going, but not being encouraging either, which you were okay with, because you totally understood.
Months later, you found yourself on a plane in a row by yourself, until someone plopped down next to you.
"Hey," she said with a smile.
"Hi," You said back.
She wore a black baseball cap with a cat on it, covering her long dark-blonde hair pulled into a pony. Her backpack was covered with all kinds of pins, many of them being popular internet memes. Some with obscure or graphic phrases, others with funny pictures. You couldn't help but giggle and laugh.
She was a friend from there and on. You found out her name was Chelsey, and she was going the same place you were. She had your same kind of humor, which was all over the place—dark, punny, sarcastic, obscure, goofy—basically all the things wrapped up together.
Which was why you knew she was being pretend mean to you, now, in your shared hotel room.
"Ready to start building a tornado shelter today?"
"If we have to dig it out with a shovel, I'm just going to bury my own grave instead."
You laughed.

Weeks later on April 1st, was when the first tornado in Oklahoma touched down. It seemed like some sort of sick joke. Although short lived, the tornado left a path of destruction through a neighborhood.
You and Chelsey took one of the work vans to the town it happened in—just twenty minutes outside the one Weather Warriors was stationed in. The houses were still up but not in good shape; some had broken windows, others had crumpled walls, and garbage and sticks littered the ground.
You looked up at the sky. No clouds in sight, pure, clear blue, looking completely different than it must have just an hour ago.
'Oh, (y/n),' you thought. 'What have you gotten yourself into?'
