"No grave can hold my body down, I'll crawl home to her,"
-Work Song by Hozier
"Spell amorous,"
"Amorous. A-M-O-R-U-"
"Ah wrong! Sit down! Lawrence, Spell gorgeous,"
"Gorgeous. G-O-R-G-E-O-U-S."
"Correct,"
Alice found Gilbert's proud face across the room.
"Blythe! Ostracize?"
"O-S-T-R-A-C-I-Z-E"
"That would seem to be correct," Mr.Phillips sighed.
"Haughty, Shirley?"
"H-A-U-G-H-T-Y"
"Lawrence, Conscientious,"
"C-O-N-S-C," Giggles belonging to Anne Shirley and Diana Barry caused her to lose her focus and pause.
"Wrong, sit down!" Mr.Phillips said regaining her attention.
"But-"
"Sit down!"
Gilbert turned to her before she sat down and grabbed her wrist.
Her emerald eyes found his as he paused forgetting what he was going to say, until she gave him a look of confusion and he remembered.
"You did good, I'll win it for us though," He winked as he let go of her wrist letting her make her way back to her seat a smile gracing her face at the boy's antics.
"Callous,"
"C-A-L-L-O-U-S,"
"Penitent,"
"P-E-N-I-T-E-N-T,"
"Intentions,"
"I-N-T-E-N-T-I-O-N-S,"
"Persevere,"
"P-E-R-S-E-V-E-R-E,"
"Blythe, engagement,"
" E-N-G-A-G-," He paused catching Alice's eye as the golden light from the window beside her flooded over her causing her hair to glow and her pale yellow dress lighting up her features and making it seem to him as if she was the only person in the room.
He realised his pause as the class remained silent urging him to finish his word, the only problem being he forgot what letter he was on.
"M-,"
"That is incorrect, the spelling, not the sentiment," Mr.Phillips stated after Gilbert's letter slip up.
"Anne, you won!" Diana and all the girls shouted in glee walking quickly up to the spelling bee winner to congratulate her as Alice made her way to the loser who was looking slightly too happy for a loser.
"You'll win it for us?" She teased watching the smile on his face grow as the girl walked up to him.
"Close enough," He shrugged.
"Loserrr," She laughed as he took his cap from his head and placed it on hers.
"Guess who still did better than you," He whistled making fun of the girl.
"Hmm let me think, well not Billy anyways," Alice said as Billy overheard their conversation shooting her a glare from the cloakroom where the pair were walking towards.
-----
"Gilbert!" Alice called from the kitchen.
"Yes!" Alice didn't hear his yes as she continued to try and figure out what to make for dinner.
