Being alone was like trying to hold your breath when you're underwater. At first it doesn't feel like much. You think you can handle it, but the longer that you're holding your breath the harder it becomes. You can feel it silently clawing at you from the inside out, feel the burning pain tearing you apart. Then you realize that something so insignificant earlier was starting to kill you. You grasp onto anything you can to try to keep yourself afloat, trying to find a safe haven, something to keep you alive even for just a minute longer.

When you're frantic and in pain you will grab onto anything you can to keep yourself grounded. Even if what you're grabbing is going to be the thing that kills you in the end. I had grabbed onto him.

He was supposed to be my safe haven in the dark cruel world that was my life. When the whole world wanted to see me fail; he wanted to see me thrive, he wanted me to do more than just survive. He was the one that had made me feel like I was truly alive. He was a harbinger of death though and these were human affairs that he was not supposed to meddle in. He was only meant to bring people back to the underworld. He was not meant to protect anyone from their eventual fate. Yet, here he was breaking all barriers to keep me alive.

Ever since I was a child, he had been there lurking in the shadows silently helping me, guiding me through life, pushing me forward, without any thoughts to his own well being. He was overstepping every boundary, breaking every rule in the book, fighting against all odds and fate itself to keep me alive. This was something that no harbinger of death should have been doing, creating his own chaos in the process.

Even though I had his protection, it was no match from a being more powerful than his that was threatening to revoke my existence. In the end, everything that he had done to keep me alive would have been for nothing because I knew sooner or later I would be dead.
