Thirteen years ago..

The sun burned the back of my neck, as my mother applied SPF onto my shoulders, pushing my short black hair out of the way. She was humming a soft tune to herself that was barely loud enough to hear over the sounds of other children, my age, screaming and yelling. My mother's hands covered with lotion were cold on my hot skin and it felt refreshing given how hot and humid it was outside. When she was satisfied with the coverage, she turned me around in her arms to look at me, bending down to be eye level, she gave me a gentle smile.

"There we go, now Miss Izabol, what are the rules for the water?" She questioned me, cocking her head slightly to the left, her dark brown eyes were full of love and mirth. I glanced behind her at the Tidal wave pool that had started to calm down, the waves crashing back against the boards before coming to a halt.

My older brother Thomas and my cousin Ricky were standing a few feet away from the waters edge, looking boredly over at us. They knew they couldn't go into the water without waiting for me- that was the rule that my mother had set up for them. Since my mother and my father weren't going to join us in the water, preferring to lounge around at the waters edge with my grandparents, Thomas was in charge of me.

"Stay with Thomas at all times, don't let go of his hand. Yell for help if I am struggling or ask an adult that is in the water," I listed off the main common rules that my mother had set on our hour drive to Michigan's Adventure. We all knew that I was not the best swimmer and wouldn't be strong enough to pull myself through the currents alone but as long as my cousin and brother were there it shouldn't have been too much of an issue, they would keep me safe.

She beamed at me, showing her slightly crooked front teeth that she usually was too embarrassed to show most people. She patted my arm.

"Exactly, and Thomas is also instructed to not let you out of his sight. Your brother and you need to have each others back, we're family after all." She reminded me. I nodded my head eagerly, feeling my thick hair bob up and down, grazing the tips of my shoulders. "Now go have some fun, your father and I will be waiting right here with your grandparents."

She threw her head back in the direction that my father and his parents were at, standing a few feet away from the wave pools entrance, talking amongst themselves. My mother stood up straight and made her way over to them, and I quickly raced over to where my brother and cousin were at, they were already teetering into the water impatiently.

I was rushing over so quickly I didn't notice the figure that was walking in front of me until I hit against them. Their tanned skin was hot to the touch, and their body was a solid mass that made me lose my balance as I started to fall back. Then just as quickly their arms shot out to straighten me, large hands grabbing my arms and rightening me. I glanced up at the tall figure, trying to see their face through the glare of the sun.

I couldn't make out his features but I could see his eyes, they were dark almost completely black, void of any emotions. He let me go once he saw that I wasn't going to fall over.

"I'm sorry sir," I apologized, taking a tentative step back from him and peeking up at his face, trying to make out his expression. The sun made it nearly impossible and I dropped my gaze to his feet that were covered in black sneakers.

"Don't be too excited to get into the water," His voice was deep and harsh, the sound of it made the hair on my neck raise slightly and goosebumps rise on my arms. "Dangerous things can always happen in there,"

I lifted my nose up at him, trying to meet his gaze again but failing. The sun was too bright.

"Nothing dangerous will happen, I have my older brother who will protect me," I sniffed out, crossing my arms over my one piece top defiantly.
