"Can we start from the beginning with how Darc came to live with you?" Matthew says in between bites of his food. "By the way this is so good." He adds before I could say anything."It all started when Samantha and Darc were staying on my couch. Me and her used to be great friends and she introduced me to my now ex boyfriend. At first Samantha used to be gone at night and would be back before I went to work. Then in turned into she be gone for a day then 2 then 3 and so on so forth. She stopped answering my calls and never left any money for me to feed her." I pause taking a sip of water.
"When Samantha was gonna for a week I filed a missing persons report. It didn't do much considering I didn't know her last name. When I did that I called DCFS to report an abandoned child. Due to my career as a paramedic I was already cleared for emergency placement. But I love that kid she's absolutely adorable. When I met with the case worker I applied to be Darc foster mom. About two weeks later Samantha came knocking on my door strung out. I promptly kicked her out and told her not to worry about Darc that I would continue to take care of her. The weird thing for me was that she never fought me on it, she just left and I never saw her until today. Unfortunately she looked even worse than when I last saw her." I stopped for me to regather myself. This topic was always difficult for me.
"I've loved, cared for and overall raised her as my own. We had our routine, when I worked my 48's she would go and stay with Nancy. Her husband is my partner at work when I'm on duty for the ambulance, Nancy treats like her own. Well I took some personal time this week and next because I felt it was time to go home for longer than a weekend or a matter of a few days." I pause taking a much needed breath. I took the chance to take in Matt's facial expressions. His eyes focusing in and out on me, lips parting and closing almost as if he was wanting to say something.
"Can you say something, anything. Ask any questions that you have racing in your head. Just talk to me please." I move to in front of him trying to make him realize I was there for his girl.
"Can I see her room?" He said as a tear fell down from his right eye. I smile and reach my hand up to his face to wipe it away but am stopped by his hand grabbing mine.
"Of course, come on." I stand up, making sure to not let go of his hand. As he stands I'm pulled back and spun. His lips grazing mine as I'm pulled in to a hug. "Thank you for taking g care of my girl," I hear while the whisper comes from Matt.
When he lets go from the hug after I don't know how we stood there I turned and head towards the door next to my room that was behind the couch. "Are you sure you want me to show you? It can wait until tomorrow." I make sure he wants to see it before we go in.
With a small nod I turn the door knob and flip the switch. The pink walls and footballs and cars all over, the crib empty with her elephant blanket draped along the side of her crib. Her room is clean, for once, with her toys in the toy box and the books on the shelf next to the rocking chair. The dresser only has a few onesies sitting on top and the hook for her diaper bag is missing due to it being with Nancy. On the dresser there is also several pictures of me and her littered from our recent adventures; water park, zoo, and the running trail we do during nice weather.
"Thank you," breaks the silence of me looking around my, our child's room. Matt is clearly taking everything in.
"It's honestly no problem again, I had no idea Darc is your daughter. Also, I'm no longer going through with the adoption since I figured you wanted to have Darc with you instead of her living with me." His face had no change as if he was still taking everything in. "I want you to still be around, all the time if possible," Matt says quietly but looking towards me. His hand touching her blanket. I try to not look too far into it romantically at least since he probably wants me there to help with the transition.
