One day, Hawks and Endeavor were assigned to a joint mission to apprehend a group of low-level villains causing trouble in a quiet suburban neighborhood. The mission seemed straightforward, so Hawks, always one for a good laugh, decided to have some fun along the way.
As they flew to the location, Hawks started teasing Endeavor about his serious demeanor. "Come on, old man," Hawks grinned, "loosen up a bit! You look like you're on your way to fight All for One when we're just dealing with some petty crooks."
Endeavor, unimpressed, grumbled something under his breath and focused on the task at hand. But Hawks wasn’t about to give up. He suddenly veered off course and flew directly over a large park below. Before Endeavor could ask what he was doing, Hawks pointed to a group of kids flying kites.
"I bet I can get one of those kites tangled in your flames without burning it!" Hawks said with a mischievous grin.
Endeavor rolled his eyes. "Stop fooling around and—" But before he could finish, Hawks had already swooped down and grabbed one of the kites, flying it up to Endeavor’s level. The kids below started cheering, thinking the heroes were putting on a show for them.
“Catch!” Hawks yelled as he tossed the kite towards Endeavor.
Reflexively, Endeavor caught it with a burst of controlled flame. However, instead of tangling in his flames as Hawks predicted, the kite burst into a fireball, turning to ash in seconds. There was an awkward silence as the kids below watched the ashes float down, their excitement turning into confusion.
Hawks was trying hard not to burst out laughing. “Whoops! Maybe we should’ve stuck to your day job, huh?”
Endeavor glared at Hawks, his pride slightly singed. "Enough with the games," he snapped, but Hawks could see the corner of his mouth twitching, betraying his attempt to hide a smile.
The rest of the mission went smoothly, but as they were wrapping up, Hawks couldn't resist one last jab. He found a small kite in the wreckage of one of the villains' hideouts and handed it to Endeavor with a straight face.
"Here, for when you want to practice your kite-flying skills. No fire this time, okay?"
Endeavor snatched the kite, ready to incinerate it on the spot, but then, with a heavy sigh, he stuffed it into his coat instead. "You’re a real pain, you know that?" he muttered, finally letting out a low chuckle.
Hawks just grinned. "Yeah, but you love it."
