—     The platter of cookies sat on the coffee table as they all gathered in the living room, a heavy silence hanging in the air. Rowan sipped her iced tea softly, seated next to Vanya on the couch. Allison cradled a cup of some alcoholic beverage, her thoughts seemingly distant. Klaus had one cookie between his teeth and another in his hand as he poured himself a glass of vodka from behind the bar. Diego had taken a cookie from the kitchen earlier when no one was around, the crumbs gathered at the corner of his lips. Luther, well, he had already helped himself to four of them.

"Um," Luther began, standing from the couch as his voice broke the silence. "I guess we should get this started. So, I figured we could have a sort of memorial service in the courtyard at sundown. Say a few words, just at Dad's favorite spot."

"Dad had a favorite spot?" Vanya asked, her confusion clear in her tone.

"Yeah, you know, under the oak tree," Luther said, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. "We used to sit out there all the time. None of you ever did that?"

Rowan shook her head slightly, pursing her lips. "Nope. Can't say that we did."

Klaus, ever the eccentric, shoved his last cookie into his mouth, holding a glass in one hand and a cigarette in the other. "Will there be refreshments?" He asked with his mouth full. "Tea? Who am I kidding, Rowboat's awake, of course there'll be tea. But scones? Cucumber sandwiches are always a winner."

"What? No," Luther replied with frustration. "And put that out. You know Dad didn't allow smoking in here."

Allison furrowed her brows as she eyed Klaus. "Is that my skirt?"

Klaus paused mid-pose, then continued extravagantly showing off the skirt. "What? Oh, yeah, this," he twirled, enjoying the attention. "It's a little dated, I know, but it's breathy on the bits."

Rowan stifled a laugh, but Luther wasn't amused. "Listen up," Luther said, bringing them back to the matter at hand, his voice loud and authoritative. "There are still some important things that we need to discuss, all right?"
