— Once they got into the car, Rowan suddenly realized she hadn't said goodbye to anyone back at the academy. But, with Five already wanting to talk to Vanya, it worked out in her favor. That's how the two ended up in the living room of Vanya's apartment, waiting for her to get home in pitch darkness— much to Rowan's complaint.

When Vanya finally opened the door and reached for the light switch, Five was quicker, clicking on the lamp before she could.

"Jesus!" Vanya exclaimed, clutching her chest in fright.

Five sat in the chair with perfect posture, his ankle resting on his knee. Rowan was more relaxed, leaning back against a pillow on the couch, her legs crossed comfortably.

"You should have locks on your windows," Five announced, his tone serious as Rowan sent Vanya a wide, amused smile.

"I live on the second floor," she replied incredulously, still catching her breath as she set her keys down.

"Rapists can climb."

Both girls exchanged a glance, concern flickering in their eyes as Vanya shut the door. "You are so weird," she muttered, shaking her head as she moved to sit beside Rowan on the couch.

Vanya sent Rowan a tired smile, but her eyes quickly landed on Five, noticing a splotch of blood on his collar. Rowan, thanks to him, didn't have a hair out of place— which only deepened Vanya's concern.

Five glanced at Rowan for a moment, as if making sure she wasn't going to blab, and then shrugged off Vanya's worry. "It's nothing."

"Why are you here?" Vanya asked, her voice a mix of confusion and weariness.

Five sighed, reluctantly. "I've decided that you two are the only ones I can trust."

"Why us?" Vanya questioned, her brow furrowing as she tried to understand.

Five nodded at her, his expression simple, almost detached. "Because you're ordinary."

Rowan's brows furrowed in confusion, her heart sinking slightly at the implication. For a moment, she thought he didn't really trust her, that he only brought her along because she had insisted on coming. But then, as if sensing her thoughts, Five's eyes flickered up to hers. "And because you'll listen," he added, his gaze softening slightly.
