Jyn strolled down the street with Erika by his side, heading toward the local badminton center. He carried his prized badminton gear bag, which he jokingly called "the most expensive in the whole wide world." Though it only costed him 4,000 yen, to Jyn, it was a luxury—one he had paid for by surviving on his friends' snacks during breaks and hoping it would be enough to get him through the day.
Maho Nishizumi had suggested taking a break from their usual routine to try out other sports, and they all agreed on badminton. The day was bright and sunny, with a gentle breeze in the air. Jyn, unable to contain his excitement, would occasionally skip a step, while Erika walked beside him with her usual composed grace.
This would be a refreshing change of pace for everyone. Kuromorimine, being the powerhouse it was, had rented out all the courts at the badminton center, with Maho encouraging every team member to join in. As Jyn and Erika arrived, the center was already buzzing with the sound of chatter and shuttlecocks striking rackets.
The Nishizumi siblings were already there, with Maho, Kyouhel, and Miho among the crowd. Miho had asked her sister if they could join in since their ship was docked at the same port. The atmosphere was lively, with the excitement of trying something new filling the air.
Jyn pulled out his most priced possession of all rackets. A white with red stripes Victor Thruster Ryuga series racket.
As everyone began warming up, Jyn took a moment to stretch and get his racket ready. He swung his arms in wide circles, then did a few practice serves, each one missing the mark just slightly. He tried again, but the shuttlecock awkwardly flew off to the side, landing nowhere near where he intended.
"Huh, am I rusty? How long has it been since I last played?," Jyn muttered under his breath as he tried to shake off the rust. He could feel eyes on him and looked up to see Kyouhel watching him with an amused grin.
"Having some trouble, Jyn? You look like you haven't played since the Stone Age," Kyouhel teased, his voice hinted with playful sarcasm.
Jyn shot him a mock glare. "I'm just saving my energy for when it counts, Kyouhel. Don't worry, you'll get to see the real deal soon enough," he replied, trying to shake off the nerves.
Kyouhel chuckled, tapping his racket against his shoulder. "Sure, sure. Just don't pull a muscle in your ancient warm-up routine."
Jyn was a notoriously sore loser. Well a 'sore-loser' is an overstatement as he could take defeats gracefully, as many people had thought. They never knew the building frustration in his body every time he loses something that he should be besting everyone on, especially when it came to something he prided himself on. The idea of being outdone by someone, particularly Kyouhel, gnawed at him. He could feel the heat rising inside him, simmering just below the surface. It was as if steam was about to burst out of his ears, his frustration barely contained behind a forced smile. Every one of Kyouhel's remarks felt like a match striking a fuse, and Jyn was doing everything he could to keep from exploding.
In Jyn's modest bedroom, are not so modest decorations which consists of framed certificates on the wall and trophies in his cabinet, all from his badminton adventures before.
Erika, already in position and effortlessly hitting the shuttlecock back and forth with Maho, glanced over at Jyn. "You'll be fine," she said simply, though the corner of her mouth twitched upward as if suppressing a smile.
Jyn huffed, determined to prove he wasn't as rusty as he appeared. He spent the rest of the warm-up trying to get his shots under control, but each time he missed, Kyouhel would chime in with another playful jab.
"Are you trying to hit the birds in the rafters? Because you're getting close," Kyouhel called out after Jyn's latest attempt went soaring high.
By the time the warm-up ended, Jyn was laser-focused—on obliterating his opponents for the day. His first target on his list for today: the Nishizumi siblings. Forget the shuttlecock, forget the match strategy; Jyn had only one goal now: proving people wrong.
