Blackfoot was stalking a mouse, it had been a few days since he had eaten. He was already desperate to sink his jaws into the small creature. Suddenly he paused. He could feel eyes on him, intent eyes. Almost threatening.
Is someone watching me again? He'd grown used to being watched after becoming a rogue. Blackfoot purposefully let his tail swish on a leaf, alerting the mouse to his presence.
The mouse let out a startled squeak and darted away, kicking up leaf litter as it did.
Blackfoot turned. “Who’s there?” he growled, sliding out his claws.
Blackfoot was depressingly unsurprised when Tigerclaw came into view. “You should have caught that mouse!” he snarled.
Blackfoot was unfazed, which only seemed to fuel Tigerclaw’s fury. “You distracted me.” Blackfoot responded plainly, giving Tigerclaw a deadpan look.
Tigerclaw got in Blackfoot’s face. “A good warrior wouldn't get distracted so easily.” he growled, his voice threateningly quiet.
Blackfoot flinched a little. But he wouldn't be scared into submission. His friends had been Clawface and Brokenstar. Tigerclaw was nothing. “I’m not a warrior. I am a rogue.” he mewed matter of factly.
A slash across his face caused blood to drip down onto one of his black paws. Tigerclaw had just slashed him, unsurprisingly. “Do not disrespect me ever again. Do I make myself clear?” he hissed menacingly, claws gleaming in the sunlight.
Blackfoot covered his new wound with his tail, pain was making his vision cloud. “Yes.” he grumbled, shame wasn't something he felt often. But he felt it now.
Tigerclaw moved so he was standing over Blackfoot. It made Blackfoot feel as though he was an ant. Tigerclaw wasn't that much taller than him, however in that moment he felt so small and insignificant. “Say it like you mean it!” Tigerclaw snapped, moving so that Blackfoot had no choice but to look him in the eye.
Blackfoot swallowed back a sharp retort. He wasn't an idiot, he could see the graveness of the situation. “I will never disrespect you again.” he forced out, making the words sound as respectful as possible.
Tigerclaw finally let Blackfoot get up. “Good.” he spat. “Now you better catch something before you return to the other rogues. I have to go. But they'll tell me if you return from a hunt fruitless.” his words were all a threat.
As the brown tabby stalked away, Blackfoot was left with a bitter taste in his mouth. Tangleburr and Stumpytail were some of the most irritating and idiotic cats he had ever met. They would grovel to Tigerclaw without a shred of dignity.
Clawface was never like that! He and Blackfoot stuck together! Blackfoot had considered Clawface a friend! Yet, now Clawface was dead. And Blackfoot was alone. No Brokenstar, and no Clawface. Only this pathetic life that he didn't have any real agency in.
Blackfoot turned. What was the point anymore? He had been promised so much. Promises of becoming a respected warrior of ThunderClan after Tigerclaw took over. But it wasn't real. How would Tigerclaw explain Bluestar’s death? It was the rogues of course. Tigerclaw would use them and then simply toss them away.
Well Blackfoot wasn't disposable. He could not simply be thrown out like old bedding.
Tigerclaw thinks I need him? No. I do not! I am sick of this cruel treatment! I am sick of just being a pawn. Blackfoot took a step forward. When I fight. . . I will fight for a purpose. I fight for something I actually care about. And I know who will join me. I know a cat that would never betray me. He also just so happens to be very easy to find. I won't even have to find him. We're expected to be in the same place in a few days. During the attack on ThunderClan. Broken. . . Tail I suppose, will join me. I don't even care about freedom at this point. Just anything other than this would be a better life! With his plan decided, Blackfoot took the rose petal he had keeped tucked in his fur, and dropped it. I finally know what I'm going to do.
And so, he returned to hunting. After all, Tigerclaw’s threat would carry out otherwise. Besides, what was a few more days of agonizing loyalty to a cat that had technically led to this whole thing? It was Tigerclaw who had Clawface steal the kits from ThunderClan. Brokenstar and Blackfoot had simply agreed, how naive they had been. And because the kits were stolen Brokenstar had been driven from ShadowClan. . . So it was Tigerclaw who got Clawface killed.
That thought brought new fuel to the fire brewing inside Blackfoot. Now he had every reason to betray Tigerclaw. Tigerclaw had killed his. . . Best friend.
