The world seemed to stand still as Satoru's question hung in the air, his normally vibrant blue eyes filled with an uncharacteristic vulnerability. The silence between you stretched on, thick with tension, and you could feel your heart pounding in your chest.
Did you feel the same way?
You'd been asking yourself that question for days now, ever since you noticed the shift in his behavior, the way his touch lingered, the way his gaze seemed to hold something deeper. But hearing him say it out loud, hearing him admit that things were changing between you, made it all the more real.
Satoru's usual cocky demeanor was nowhere to be found; instead, he looked almost... scared. The thought of him being afraid—of you, of your answer—was enough to make your heart ache.
"Satoru..." you began, your voice trembling as you struggled to find the right words.
He watched you intently, his gaze never leaving yours, waiting for your response. The uncertainty in his eyes made him look younger, more vulnerable than you'd ever seen him.
"I... I don't know," you admitted, the words tumbling out before you could stop them. "Everything feels so confusing right now."
His expression faltered for a moment, but he quickly recovered, nodding as if he understood. "Yeah, I get that. I've been confused too."
You looked down at your hands, fidgeting with the hem of your shirt. "It's just... we've been friends for so long. And now... now it feels like everything is changing so fast."
Satoru was silent for a moment, and when he spoke again, his voice was softer, gentler. "I don't want to lose you, Y/N. But I also can't keep pretending that I don't feel this way."
His honesty was disarming, and you felt a surge of emotion—fear, longing, and something deeper, something that had been growing inside you for longer than you cared to admit.
"I don't want to lose you either," you whispered, your voice barely audible. "But what if... what if this ruins everything?"
Satoru reached out, his hand brushing against yours, tentative and hesitant. "It doesn't have to," he said, his voice steady. "We can figure this out, together. But only if you want to."
His touch sent a shiver down your spine, and you realized, with startling clarity, that you did want to figure it out. You wanted to understand these feelings, to explore whatever it was that was blossoming between you. But more than that, you didn't want to lose him—not as a friend, and not as something more.
Slowly, you lifted your gaze to meet his, and in that moment, everything else faded away. It was just the two of you, sitting side by side in the quiet grove, the world around you slipping into the background.
"I want to try," you said, your voice stronger now, filled with a newfound determination. "I don't know what this is, or where it's going, but... I want to try."
Satoru's eyes lit up, a relieved smile spreading across his face. "Yeah?" he asked, his voice tinged with hope.
"Yeah," you replied, your own smile mirroring his.
For a moment, neither of you moved, the reality of what you'd just admitted sinking in. But then Satoru's hand tightened around yours, his thumb brushing lightly over your knuckles, and the space between you seemed to disappear.
He leaned in slowly, giving you plenty of time to pull away if you wanted to. But you didn't. Instead, you found yourself leaning in too, your heart racing as the distance between you shrank to nothing.
And then, in a heartbeat, his lips were on yours.
The kiss was gentle at first, almost hesitant, as if he was afraid of pushing you too far. But when you didn't pull away—when you instead moved closer, your free hand finding its way to the back of his neck, pulling him deeper into the kiss—he responded back.
The world around you seemed to blur, your senses narrowing down to just the feel of his lips against yours, the warmth of his hand in yours, the way his breath mingled with yours as the kiss deepened. It was both everything and nothing like you'd imagined—a heady mix of emotions that made your head spin.
You didn't know how long the kiss lasted—time seemed to have lost all meaning. But when you finally pulled back, breathless and a little dizzy, you found Satoru staring at you with a look of awe and something deeper, something that made your heart skip a beat.
"Wow," he breathed, his voice barely more than a whisper. "That was... I mean, wow."
You laughed softly, the sound was light and airy, filled with a mixture of nerves and excitement. "Yeah, wow."
Satoru grinned, his usual playful smirk making a return. "You know, if I'd known kissing you would be this good, I might've tried it sooner."
You rolled your eyes, but there was no hiding the smile on your face. "You're impossible."
"Maybe," he said, leaning in to brush his lips against yours again, a featherlight touch that sent another shiver down your spine. "But you like me anyway."
You couldn't argue with that, not when your heart was still racing from the kiss, and especially not when Satoru was looking at you like you were the only person in the world.
As the two of you sat there, the evening air cooling around you, there was a sense of something new between you—something fragile, yes, but also exciting and full of possibility.
"I'm really glad we're doing this," Satoru said softly, his hand still holding yours, his thumb tracing circles on your skin.
"Me too," you replied, leaning your head against his shoulder, the weight of the day's confusion and uncertainty finally lifting. "Me too."
And in that quiet moment, as the stars began to peek through the darkening sky.
