Work was what I had begun, and work was what I was going to finish... After thinking about my world domination plan, and dozing off, this time waking up to the sound of an unimportant notification on my phone. I still had half the day left so I rushed my work and finished 10 minutes before I left, contemplating life in the meantime. Once I had waited for the complementary 30 minutes after the rest of the workforce had left the building, I left too. You would think this would be a relatively normal day, at least for me. No weird beverage mix, no staying late after work, no lasagne after reaching my house. Overall, no shenanigans today... Until now, for I had been condemned by an unknown force to never have an ordinary day again. Subsequent to me leaving the building, I was met with her, Ramina. The girl who, for some odd reason had the name of the girl who had somehow acted like she had liked me in school, got me to go on a date with her, and then didn't show up, seemingly on purpose.
"Well you've had a bit of an upgrade, haven't you?" the girl whose name I had professedly damned in my mind mused.
"I have, evidently. From a pushover to a wicked boss, the transition is ludicrous," I agreed with her statement.
"Now," she began, filling me with anticipation, wondering what she could have to say or do, "I... I guess you do recognise me. I chose to say this was my name to see if you would recognise the name of the girl who had embarrassed you so badly," she revealed as my face turned with shock.
"You're really her?!" I exclaimed a bit too loud, partly curling up as some confused faces turned to me on the street.
"No, I am just using her name, Roy," she started, "I am Arthur Daniels... And in other words... I am your grandfather," she, or rather he explained with as much conviction as he could muster.
"Wow," I was amazed at this revelation, "I thought... But... Were you also re... Umm... Put into this world. In another person's body, I mean," I stuttered, as if I had met the richest man in the world.
"Yes, I was, as soon as I died, I was here," whispering now, the old man in the young woman's body described.
"How did you die anyway, murder, arson, poison, what?" I frantically asked, keeping my voice down.
"I- I don't really know," he began, my face twisting in astonishment. "One second I was alive, the next second I was dead, and then I woke up in this body. It was as if someone had "/kill"-ed me," he evaluated. I laughed at his explanation, but pondered to myself whether it really was off the table of possibilities, or whether it was the only real option there.
"Well I think that's enough mind blowing revelations for today," I began to wrap up the conversation that had my face turning at every word.
"I agree," the fellow, reincarnated man said, with nothing more to say in his arsenal of topics. And with that, we both went our separate ways home, me to my taxi, and her to her respective home.Once I had gotten home, I had the sudden urge to just not go to work tomorrow. True to my desires, I scheduled a day off for me the next day, and sat down. This was the first time I had taken a day off. It hadn't even started, but it felt good. I could choose when I didn't want to go to work. I could never do that for school! In this new life, I was the boss of myself.
I didn't eat, I just watched TV for a bit and went to bed after forgetting to brush my teeth. I then got out of bed, brushed my teeth, and went back to bed. I went in a dream, yet not unlike the real world, I was the boss, but in a different way than you would think.
I was sitting in my office, when one of my secretaries came up to me and began speaking in garbled language. I then looked at her, realising she was a lizard. I thought it was weird, and remembered going to bed. At that moment, I realised I was dreaming. And so it began, the lucid dream.
I had seen videos online about it, how you could control the dream. I also knew most of the rules: don't think about your bed, don't close your eyes for more than 5 seconds, don't confuse the events of your dream to the events of real life, and don't murder anyone. The last one was because dreams are so surreal that you would carry the conscience of killing someone to real life and it could affect your mental health.
To stabilise the lucid dream, you had to twirl around in a circle once, and though it was unknown to me why, I did it. When previously, my vision had been hazy, now it was as clear as reality. With the push of a thought, I was no longer in the workplace, I was flying high above the clouds. There were aeroplanes flying beside me. I flew up close to one of the cockpits, just so they could see me, but I wasn't blocking their view. I shouted, "Hey!" and waved to the pilot. She reluctantly waved back, confusion splayed across her face.
I flew up higher, now wondering about something that had been alluding my mind for quite a while, my family, they had been the most important to me in my old world. With another thought, I was in my old world again, I was Roy again. Uncle, auntie, grandfather, and two unfamiliar faces. A man and a woman. I smiled as it dawned on me, they had to be my parents. I ran in to hug the closest family member to me, yet found nothing but dust. The family I had created from the depths of my imagination turned to ashes, blown aside by the wind. I turned behind me.
Julius and his grandfather were what I saw. Julius, an old friend from my old world turned evil, or rather, he always was. The old man beside him was his grandfather, a man who had somehow had a deep rooted hatred within him for mine, and in turn, for me.
"Beware, for the admins shall come," was all they both said, in sync, before turning away and being reduced to dust.
"Aaahh!" I screamed as I sat up in bed. I looked at the clock on my bedside table, '3:24' was on the OLED display. I layed back down, recalling the events of my lucid dream. I then fell into a long, dreamless sleep.
