Five years later..
Present DayNew York was loud and busy as usual, Kate and I ended up moving here after the death of our friends. Less tornadoes and painful memories, but just because we moved didn't mean the nightmares stopped. Once or twice a week one of would be awoken by the other's screams after a while they died down but they still came and went.
We ended up getting a job at the National Weather Service here in NYC, it was a good job but sitting infront of a screen for 8-12 hours a day was boring and irritating. Kate hadn't came in too work yet as she had an errand to run and said she'd be a few minutes late, so I just sat at my desk watching the radars. "Sorry I'm late." Kate spoke up from behind me sitting at her desk beside mine. "No worries." I smiled at her. "Kate, Reina? What do you see?" Our boss said from behind us causing us to look at the radar. "Wind speeds have fallen 2 knots. Structures weakening aswell." Kate told her. "Looks like it's falling through, should lose steam." I finished. "Let's hold off on any alerts." She told him.
"Kate, Reina? There's a guy in the conference room asking for you both." Nolan told us. "Popular today are we?" I joked at her. We walked to the conference room, Kate introducing us both. "Hey guys." The guy- Javi turned around. "Javi?" I asked as he came and hugged us both. "Been a while guys." He smiled. "Can we talk? Like maybe grab a coffee or something?" He asked. Great. This should be good. "Sure." Kate answered.

"After graduating I went back to Miami. Felt like I needed to regroup. Shit, you guys wouldn't believe it I joined the military." He told us as we walked to a near by coffee shop. "You? In the military?" I questioned. "Yeah was feeling kind of lost." He answered. We all were. "Tried reaching out to you Kate a few times." He looked at her. She half smiled and looked down before responding "Yeah I'm not great with communication." She told him. He agreed, and told us he stopped by our moms. "-she said you don't come home anymore. I knew you moved but I didn't expect you to move somewhere like New York." He finished. "It's great, people are nice." Kate said as a Taxi came out of nowhere slamming on its breaks. "Most people." I grumbled.
Javi showed us the radar he operated in the military, looked like something out of a video game. "You leveled up from Dorothy." Kate said handing him the phone. "Many levels. It was so powerful and fast I could watch a moth fly from like a mile away. But I kept asking myself what if we point it at a tornado?" He looked at us. Before he even explained I knew what he was asking. "It's the size of a building you'd never be able to get it close enough-" He cut her off. "Until now, the military came out with portable units. They're small, got my hands on a few prototypes." He said getting up and asking a man if he could use some sauce packets. He explained to us that if we were to put 3 of these around the tornado in a triangle effect we could have a 3 dimensional scan of the tornado. "The most perfect scan of a tornado ever, guys we can use this data to save lives back home." He finished.
"It's incredible." I told him. I knew it was coming. "I know and you guys are the only people that can get me close enough to do this." There it was, the dreaded sentence. It was quiet for a moment as memories flashed throughout my mind and I could see by Kate's expression the same was happening to her. I cleared my throat and leaned back, "Javi I'm sorry but we don't chase anymore.". "Come on guys..what have you been doing here? Sitting behind a computer screen? The girls I know would be going into the storm while everyone else was running away-" Kate cut him off before he could finish. "We aren't those girls anymore." He leaned forward. "You guys have a gift, I can't do this without you guys." Kate was quiet as was I before she spoke up putting money on the table. "We should really be getting back, it was good seeing you. Be careful out there." She said getting up, I followed her. "Guys. You ever wonder why it was us that made it out?" Javi asked us. Kate hurried out the door. "I'm sorry Javi." I spoke before following my sister.

The rest of the day was quick, quiet, and irritating. 5 years. It had been that long since it happened yet the 2 of us still had nightmares and anxiety about storms. They say after a while it doesn't hurt, that eventually you'll let go and forget. How could anyone forget what happened that day? In between my thoughts my phone lit up. Javi. I clicked on the attachment he sent, "Another town destroyed by tornado outbreak in Oklahoma." I sighed listening to the voice message as Kate knocked on my door. "You get the same thing?" She asked, I nodded.
"Maybe we should go." I looked at her with wide eyes. "You're agreeing?" I asked with shock. "People's lives are at stake Rei. Think about how many more people will die if we do t get these scans, we could increase warning time, figure out how they form, maybe a way to divert or stop them." She said, i sighed shaking my head. "You remember aswell as I what happened last time we tried that." I whispered. "I know, but can we atleast hear him out? One week. That's it and then we can come home, maybe even visit mom while we're there." She smiled. I smiled shaking my head. "One week. It'd be nice to see mom." So we packed a bag or two each and told Javi we were coming. Little did we know this was gonna be one hell of a week.
