Eiden moved closer, towering over her, his presence overwhelming as he placed his hands on either side of her, trapping her between him and the table. His voice dropped lower, more intense. "I do... but you can be careful this time, can't you?"
Maevie felt her heart race as she met his gaze, his proximity sending a shiver down her spine. She sighed, her resistance wavering. "I think so..." she whispered, releasing her clenched fist, the tension slowly seeping out of her. "Now, move. I need to go."
Eiden didn't move, his eyes narrowing slightly as he studied her face. "Wait..." he said, his voice softer this time. "Are you feeling alright?"
Maevie kept her back to him, still facing the table. "Yes, I'm fine," she replied, though the tightness in her voice betrayed her.
"No, you're not," Eiden countered, a smirk playing on his lips as he leaned in closer, his breath warm against her neck.
Maevie closed her eyes tightly, feeling the heat rise to her cheeks. She knew he could sense her unease, and it infuriated her. "I'm fine. It's just... last night, I barely slept. You know, it was-" She faltered, her face turning red as she struggled to find the right words.
Eiden's hand moved to hers, his touch firm yet gentle as he felt the tension in her clenched fingers. "Was I too rough yesterday?" he asked, his voice tinged with a mix of concern and something more primal.
Maevie's face flushed a deeper shade of red, her embarrassment overwhelming as she avoided his gaze. Her voice barely above a whisper, she replied, "I... I... Let's not talk about it. It's not that. I just couldn't sleep, that's all."
Eiden's eyes softened slightly as he placed his chin on her shoulder, his breath warm against her skin. "May I know the reason?" he asked, his tone surprisingly gentle.
Maevie had enough. She snapped, turning sharply to face him, her eyes blazing with frustration. "I don't know, can you stop talking like this?" she demanded, her voice shaking slightly as she looked into his cold hazel eyes. Her face was flushed, her heart pounding in her chest.
Eiden was momentarily taken aback by her outburst, but he quickly regained his composure, his expression unreadable. "Oh, why are you angry? I was just concerned," he said calmly.
She pushed him away, her hands trembling slightly as she glared at him. "You want me to stay late, right? Fine, I will. Happy?" she snapped, turning on her heel and heading for the door.
Eiden watched her go, his eyes narrowing slightly as he called out, "Wait." Maevie stopped her hand on the doorknob and turned back to face him.
"Try to wear something that covers up to your neck," he said, his tone more commanding than before. Maevie instinctively covered her neck with one hand, feeling the heat rise to her cheeks once more. "I can cover it up with makeup," she retorted, her voice tinged with defiance. Without waiting for a response, she left the room, her heart pounding as she walked away from him.
