earth
the dream, the goal

for marlow kane, going to earth had never been something she thought about. she liked being on the ark. her childhood dream was to be the next chancellor.

of course, that was before she experienced first-hand the harsh reality of what being the chancellor would entail; of what staying on the ark would entail.

you see, marlow's mother was floated when marlow was just 10 years old. witnessing that event changed everything about marlow. it changed how she looked at the ark, how she saw people she knew and looked up to.
it changed her opinion of her own father and the dreams she previously held for her future.

marlow's rose-coloured glasses were shattered, and every aspect of her life was flipped on its head.

the first worst day in marlow's life

following her mothers premature death, marlow began to act out. at first she was given leeway, being a councilman's daughter and all; but that extra "wiggle room" wore thin quick. one of her closest friends started to judge her actions and even told her she was "too difficult to maintain a relationship with anymore".

she was left with one childhood friend - clarke griffin.
clarke was her best friend and sister and one day, marlow had to watch as she endured the same devastating, life altering experience that marlow had; only this time may have been worse.

clarke's father - jake griffin - was a successful man. he was friends with the chancellor as well as marlow's father.
jake was the senior environmental engineer on the ark, and he had unfortunately found a flaw in the ark's life support system; the conclusion... the ark was dying.
marlow had been hanging out with clarke the day jake planned to go public with his knowledge; both girls overheard him talking about the problem and how he needed the people to know.

the girls had, at first, begged, pleaded and tried to stop him. they knew he'd be executed for announcing such a revelation and going against the council. ultimately, he had already weighed the consequences of both either option and decided it was best for everyone to share the information.

both girls made their own decision together that day; their only option was to help the man in this endeavour.

unfortunately, wells jaha, the son of the chancellor told his father what jake had planned to do. because of this act of stupid act by the boy, marlow and clarke were arrested immediately whilst clarke's dad was executed.

the second worst day in marlow's life

marlow had been in the sky box for just over a year now. she was locked in 'solitary confinement'. which wasn't solitary at all given she shared a cell with clarke.

the two girls - who considered each other sisters now more than ever - had managed to survive, so far, in a tiny cell originally meant for one. they had made it there 'home' as what was once a boring, colourless, cold cell was now their own colourless, cold and covered in sketches 'bunk' as clarke liked to say.
the sketches around the room had been courtesy of clarke griffin herself and herself alone as marlow was terrible at drawing.

usually, it brought comfort to the girls; to be surrounded by the different images of earth and a few portraits of people they loved.
today was different though.

today was marlow's birthday.

she was turning 18 and so today, marlow would die.
