Sakura remained in her office chair, the faint scent of bourbon lingering in the air as she contemplated the impossible task before her. The glass in her hand felt heavy, mirroring the weight of her thoughts. The masked man's threats echoed in her mind, his voice intertwining with the cold reality of what she had to do.
She glanced at the clock. Midnight had come and gone, the hospital quiet save for the occasional beep of machines or the distant shuffle of feet. Sakura was usually comforted by the late hours when she could focus on her work undisturbed. But tonight, the silence was suffocating, amplifying the ticking clock that now felt like a countdown.
Her mind raced, trying to devise a plan that could save her and those she cared about. She needed to procure the drugs without raising suspicion, and she needed to do it quickly. The mere thought of failing sent a shiver down her spine, her hand trembling slightly as she took another sip.
The solution she had come up with—funneling the drugs through the hospital's supply chain—was fraught with risks. It would involve altering records, creating false patient reports, and manipulating the system in ways that left little room for error. Even the slightest mistake could expose her, and she knew that if the masked man found out, there would be no mercy.
But there was no other option. She couldn't go to Ino, Tsunade, or any of her friends. They would see right through her, and she couldn't bear to drag them into this mess. No, this was her burden to carry alone.
Sakura straightened in her chair, setting the empty glass down on her desk. She opened her laptop, the screen casting a pale glow over her tired features as she accessed the hospital's records. Her fingers hovered over the keys, her heart pounding as she hesitated. This was the point of no return. Once she altered the records, there would be no undoing it.
She took a deep breath, forcing herself to focus. She started typing, her movements precise and deliberate as she began to execute her plan. Patient files were adjusted, dosages were modified, and orders were placed under the guise of legitimate medical needs. Every keystroke felt like a hammer driving a nail into her conscience, but she pushed the guilt aside. There was no room for hesitation.
Hours passed in a blur, the hospital's records meticulously manipulated to create the cover she needed. When she was finally done, the first light of dawn was breaking over the horizon. Sakura sat back, exhaustion weighing heavily on her. She had done everything she could to ensure the delivery would go unnoticed, but doubt gnawed at her. Would it be enough?
She closed her laptop and rubbed her temples, trying to alleviate the pounding headache that had settled in. Sakura couldn't afford to dwell on what she had just done. There was no time to second-guess herself.
Suddenly, the door to her office creaked open, and Sakura's heart leaped into her throat. Her first instinct was to reach for the kunai hidden under her desk, but she stopped when she recognized the familiar figure standing in the doorway.
"Tsunade?" she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Tsunade stood there, her expression unreadable as her eyes fixed on her. She looked like the same Tsunade she always knew, but something about her demeanor was different. It wasn't the calm, confident Tsunade she knew—there was an edge to her, a tension that hadn't been there before.
"Sakura," she said, stepping into the room and closing the door behind her. "What are you still doing here? It's past dawn."
"I... I was catching up on some paperwork," Sakura lied, forcing a smile. "Couldn't sleep, so I thought I'd get some things done."
Tsunade's gaze lingered on her for a moment, as if she could see right through her facade. She walked over to her desk, her movements slow and deliberate. "You look exhausted. Are you sure everything's alright?"
Sakura's heart raced. Did she suspect something? She couldn't afford to let her guard down. "I'm fine," she replied quickly, standing up from her chair. "Just tired, that's all. I was actually about to head home and get some rest."
Tsunade didn't respond immediately. Instead, she reached out and gently touched her shoulder, her eyes softening with concern. "If there's anything you need to talk about, you know you can come to me, right?"
Sakura felt a lump in her throat, the sincerity in her voice threatening to break through the walls she had hastily constructed around herself. She wanted to tell her everything, to confide in her like she had so many times before. But she couldn't. Not this time.
"Thank you, Tsunade," she said, her voice strained. "But really, I'm fine. I just need some sleep."
Tsunade studied her for a moment longer, then nodded, seemingly accepting her explanation. "Alright. Just... take care of yourself, okay? You've been pushing yourself too hard."
"I will," Sakura promised, her voice barely steady. She quickly gathered her things, eager to escape the room before Tsunade could see the cracks in her composure.
As she left the hospital, the weight of what she had done pressed down on her even harder. The streets of Konoha were just beginning to stir with the early morning activity, but Sakura felt like she was walking through a dream, her mind numb from the enormity of the task she had just undertaken.
She had succeeded in covering her tracks for now, but the clock was ticking. The masked man would return tonight, expecting his delivery. And if anything went wrong...
Sakura shook her head, forcing the thought away. She couldn't allow herself to think about the consequences. Not yet. All she could do was focus on the next step and hope that when the time came, she would be ready.
As she made her way home, the sun climbed higher in the sky, casting long shadows over the village. Sakura knew that those shadows would follow her, lingering over every decision she made until this ordeal was over. And in the depths of those shadows, the masked man waited, his presence a constant reminder of the danger she was in.
But Sakura was determined. She would survive this, no matter what it took. Because now, it wasn't just her life on the line—it was the lives of everyone she cared about.
And she would do whatever it took to protect them
