Chapter 8: Spot
"Haruto, listen up," Jihoon started, adopting a stern expression. "You better not fuck this up. Good, no ripped jeans or those oversized hoodies."
Asahi nodded in agreement. "Did you brush your teeth? Bad breath is a major turn-off."
Hyunsik, ever the fashion expert, chimed in, "Finally! You wore the new shirt I bought you. It looks great on you. And don't forget to style your hair. You don't want to look like a mess."
Jihoon couldn't resist teasing his friend. "And don't forget to practice your charming smile. You know, the one that makes all the girls swoon."
Haruto rolled his eyes, a blush creeping up his cheeks. "Guys, I can handle myself," he protested, but a small smile tugged at his lips.
Despite the teasing, he felt a surge of excitement. This was a big deal.
"Alright, I'll be going now. Wish me luck." Haruto said before climbing his motor bike and putting his helmet on, waving goodbye to his friends.
The wind whipped through as he sped through the familiar streets. His heart pounded a frantic rhythm against his ribs. He gripped the handlebars tighter, knuckles turning white. A mix of excitement and dread churned within him, a potent cocktail of emotions he couldn't quite shake off.
This wasn't just any ordinary meet-up. It was a date. At least, he hoped it was.
His friends had practically turned his brain into mush with their incessant teasing and advice. He glanced down at his reflection on the rearview mirror.
Did he look okay? He'd spent an eternity in front of the mirror, trying to achieve the perfect look.
The familiar sight of their spot came into view. His stomach twisted into knots. He slowed down, his mind racing.
What if Jeongwoo was already there?
What if he was late?
What if... What if...
He shook his head, trying to dispel the negative thoughts. This was supposed to be fun, not a torture chamber.
With a deep breath, he parked his bike and walked towards their usual spot.
Haruto fixed his hair on the way as he shakes off the nervousness on his body. But as he reached the spot, no one was there.
"Maybe I was early." Haruto whispered, checking his watch that said 6:42.
"I'm eight minutes late though? That styling took so long." He said to himself, groaning quietly.
"Haruto?"
Haruto froze. He knew it was Jeongwoo behind him but he cannot move his body due to nervousness.
Jeongwoo walked to go in front of him which made Haruto's heart beat faster.
"Hey.. a-are you alright?" Jeongwoo asked.
Haruto's heart pounded in his ears. Jeongwoo was standing in front of him, his gaze fixed on Haruto's face, a hint of concern in his eyes. Haruto's mind went blank. He tried to form words, but nothing came out. His throat felt dry, and his palms were sweaty.
"I-I'm fine," Haruto managed to squeak out, his voice barely audible.
He cleared his throat, trying to sound more confident. "Just a bit nervous, I guess."
Jeongwoo smiled softly. "Don't be nervous. You're with me." He gestured towards the colorful picnic blanket spread out on the grass. "Let's sit down."
Haruto nodded, his legs feeling like jelly as he made his way towards the blanket. He lowered himself slowly, feeling a surge of relief when he finally sat down. The soft grass cushioned his body, providing a momentary escape from the chaos in his mind.
"Do you like it?" Jeongwoo asked.
Haruto looked at him confused at first then noticed the set up Jeongwoo made."O-oh.. yes.. Yeah, of course!" He stammered, laughing awkwardly and looking away.
"I'm sorry I didn't get in touch for a while." Jeongwoo spoke, hugging his knees. "I've been...busy with something that's been bothering me."
Haruto inhaled deeply before facing Jeongwoo. "It's alright. Wanna tell me about it?"
It was silent for a good three minutes but Haruto patiently waited for Jeongwoo to reply.
"Have you ever been in love, Ruto?"
