Chapter 9: Promise To Find You
It's been half a year now since Jeongwoo got into an accident. Haruto gripped the steering wheel, knuckles white against the worn leather.
The cityscape blurred past him, a kaleidoscope of neon lights reflecting in his tear-filled eyes.
He'd left the hospital on autopilot, the echoes of Jeongwoo's laughter and the faint flicker of recognition in his eyes swirling in his mind. It wasn't much, but it was a spark, a fragile thread connecting him to his past.
A wave of emotions washed over him - relief, regret, a fierce determination to be a part of Jeongwoo's life again.
He wouldn't erase the past; he couldn't. But he could offer a future filled with support and love, even from the shadows.
He reached the outskirts of the city, the buildings giving way to a sprawling landscape dotted with twinkling lights.
The highway stretched before him, a ribbon of asphalt leading him away from the hospital, away from Jeongwoo, but towards a future he desperately craved.
He switched on the radio, the familiar melody of a song they used to listen to together filling the car.
Memories flooded in - late-night practice sessions, whispered dreams, stolen moments of laughter shared only between them.
A bittersweet smile played on his lips, a bittersweet melody echoing in his heart.
As he drove, the cityscape receded, replaced by a vast expanse of night sky. He pulled over onto the shoulder, the engine ticking as it cooled.
Stepping out of the car, he looked up. The stars, once a symbol of shared dreams with Jeongwoo, now seemed to mock him with their indifferent brilliance.
A single tear escaped his eye, tracing a warm path down his cheek.
He whispered, his voice barely audible even to himself, "Here you are already. I'm not there. But I loved you, a lot."
The words hung heavy in the air, a silent confession to the uncaring universe. He closed his eyes, the weight of his unspoken feelings crushing him.
No matter what he did, no matter how much he tried to move on, the love for Jeongwoo remained, a constant ache in his chest.
"It's an illness I can do no longer heal from," he murmured, his voice thick with despair.
Exhausted from the emotional rollercoaster of the day, he decided to get some rest before continuing his drive.
He leaned against the car, the cool night air seeping through his clothes. Just as sleep began to claim him, a sharp jolt sent a jolt of pain through his body.
Distracted by a sudden flash of headlights, he hadn't noticed the truck swerving into his lane.
The impact was instantaneous, the screech of metal on metal a horrifying symphony that drowned out his scream.
The world spun into a kaleidoscope of twisted metal and shattered glass before plunging into darkness.
"Woo, let's meet each other again in our next lives. I promise to find you." Was Haruto's last thing in his mind.
