I stared at my sister like she was a ghost.
She ran towards me as she pulled me in for a hug, curling her arms around my neck as she squeezed me.
I could feel tears flowing from my eyes as I was happy to see her but, she looked so much like mom, that she reminded me that she is gone forever.
I was very hesitant to hug her back, but I shakily placed my hands on her back.
“Where the heck have you been?! I’ve been looking for you for the past two days! ” she said looking at me like she was about to choke me.
I couldn’t muster up the words to speak or construct a sensible sentence . “Why are you here? Did something happen?” I asked as I looked at the bandages wrapped around her right arm.
“You can say something like that, why are you here anyway? Where’s mom?” she said as she held the sides of my arms and pulled away from me.
I just looked at the floor and could feel my eyes welling up with tears, “She’s………gone.” I said as I looked her in the eyes.
She let go of my arms as she covered her mouth and started breathing heavily.
I analyzed the situation a bit until I realized......she was having a panic attack.
I took her to the living room as Lucian got her a cup of water. I tried calming her down as she started repeating the same phrase over and over again, “It’s my fault. It’s my fault. It’s my fault.”
This went on for a full five minutes until she suddenly stopped and looked at me, “It’s all my fault.” I could see a teardrop roll down her right cheek as she placed her head in her hands, silently crying.
I knelt down so that we could be at eye level with each other. I rubbed her back as she cried, she hastily pulled me in to hug me as she placed her head in the crook of my shoulder.
We stayed in this position for a good 10 minutes.
When she stopped crying, she pulled out of the hug and wiped her tears as she sniffled a bit, “Sorry about that. It's just that mom was the only other parental figure we had left.” She said, when a realization came to me.
“What happened to Gerald?” Gerald being our dad. We stopped calling him dad after he started abusing Ethina.
Ethina gave me a cynical, but sympathetic smile, “ He’s dead. I know I should probably feel bad about it but…” She paused as she closed her eyes and faced the roof. “I’ve never felt this free in a long time.” She said as she smiled at me. “ I mean, our lives are in danger, but still.” She cheered, lightening up the mood.
A few more minutes passed as we continued having our wholesome conversation, when we were rudely interrupted by someone clearing their throat as if they hadn’t had water in days.
“Do you mind?” Ethina said as she glared daggers at Lucian. He was leaning on the doorframe that separated the living room from the hallway with his arms wrapped around his torso as he stared at us with a look I couldn’t quite decipher.
“ I think you guys have forgotten the fact that strange dangerous people are after you.” He said in a nonchalant tone as he pushed himself off the doorframe and walked over to us.
“Of course not. We were just having some sibling bonding time since we haven’t seen each other in a while.” Ethina said as she continued to glare daggers at Lucian.
I just watched their interaction as I wondered how long they’ve known each other.
My thoughts were interrupted when Ethina looked at me and answered my question without me even asking.
“ We’ve known each other for about 5 years. This little sprite just couldn’t keep his comments to himself.” Ethina said as she glared at Lucian.
The comment was quite amusing seeing as he was about the same height, if not taller, than her (She’s 5'10and he’s 5'11).
I laughed as they couldn’t stop their childish bickering. They argued like siblings.
“OK! We have bigger things to worry about. We have to figure out a course of action as I know for a fact that you guys don’t want to end up like your parents.” Lucian said as he pinched the bridge of his nose, probably fighting off a headache.
Ethina stiffened up a bit and turned to me and had a look of dread in her eyes. “ The DE.” She said as I looked at her with confusion etched all over my face.
It took me a few moments to realize what she was talking about, and when I did, I felt my heart drop.
“The Devlin Empire.”
