"She was so done with her job at the local coffee shop. Don't get her wrong, she loved the place and her friend was the owner -so basically free coffe! Yay!- but the customers were... ugh."
"Just graduated from the make-up academy, they were ready for that job as a make-up stylist for this band! Make-up everyday, all day, always!"
"They worked from home, such a blessing! So whenever trhere would be a special pop up in the form of a hotty seeming in need for you to come along to their ridiculous expensive trip, you were able to of course!"

Okay, so you managed to make an original character and an interesting plot. Then there are the details, right?
Like, where does your main lives? And more importaintly; Where do they work?
Because, if your main is of legal age, they need to make money!
But are you guys stupid?! OR do none of you ever had a real job?!
(Not you, you are doing great, honey. I mean the yous that write these garbage job descriptions...)
The stereotypical barista job...
Stylist of a band/idol
Make-up artist knowing just the difference between concealing and moisturizing...
CEO on age twenty, totally believable...
Influencer in shit... Cause apparently only being pretty on pictures is enough...
Cafè owner/worker who's only there on convenient times...
And, okay, these jobs are legit for most settings if you want to give your main the chance to have their meet-cute, but... Why do ya'll suck at describing these jobs in a realistic way?!
Probably because of the lack of experiences... But hellooooooo Google!? Youtube? LinkedIn?!
There are soooo many ways to get an insight in jobs! And yet you choose to describe how *insert character* applies like twenty layers of eyeshadow on your love interest...
Or how clumsy they get when a cute customer ask for their number while they try to make them pay. Which: DUDE , Ain't nobody got time to chitchat with you! MOVE!
And the worst of all: All of them seem to drop their job in a heartbeat if it means pursuing their adventure!
UGGHHH nobody heard of how to quit a job without consequences?!
Or; how is it possible for the main character with a background of neglect/child abuse/juvinile activities to get a job AT A DAYCARE CENTER?!
There's something called a background check or papers called: Statement of conduct, which makes it so that you only can work or study if your background is clean! MOST Jobs require you to get one that's not older than 3 months, so how is it possible for your main (or any character for that matter) to land a job as a TEACHER?!
And why is it that either your main is too damn poor and needs like five jobs to meet ends, or they are miraculously banking enough on this two day servers job at the local restaurant?!
I- Dude... I mean— HOW?!
Most countries have minimale wages, so if your character needs to scrape by, they're either in debt or horrible at maintaining their money... (Which, fair plotpoints, but SO OVERUSED!)
Why is there never a normal job?! A nine to five?! Something the main can't quit like that, but shows they have responsibilities!
And no! Don't you dare to go on the SUGARDADDY tour! (Tantrum for another day!!!!!)
PEOPLE WHO BUY YOU STUFF AND YOU CAN'T REFUSE: BIIIIIIGGG RED FLAGGGGGG🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩
Get yah own money! Or don't buy shit! And sure, you can be treated, but only to logical things... So no, even a meal isn't something logical if the main doesn't even have money for their own food! That's just feeding the delulu who are apparently either: in debt or idiots not able to maintain their finances...
Jobs are like, half of people's personalities! And sure, a college student can't have a fulltime job, neither can a teenager, but that's what parents are for. Or benefits you can get from your goverment if you're an adult>.>
(Also... Students don't have an identity yet, they're mentally in the stage of figuring that out, so okay- they're off the hook for this next bit)
People work, so they can live. But they also have lives at their work! For most it's THE place where they meet other people as making friends gets harder and harder while we get older.
We also learn about responsibilities, worksettings, socials cues and more over there, yet in most stories; the job is just a need to make ends!
Which, sure, your character might hate it there... But really... All of your stories?
Or they LLLLLOVVEEEE their work, workaholics not even capable of taking a break....
Newsflash: Those people often need either; therapy, a lovelife, better friends or better hobbies. Choose your poison...
But suddenly, in these stories, once someone falls in love; poof! Gone are those skills they've learned! Bye workaholic and welcome lazy leecher!
"But they don't need a job, their SO can now provide for them"
WRONG! That's THEIR money, not yours. So again, before we go sudden Sugardaddy/Sugarmommy territory; People need to stay independent. So please, let them keep their job or make them search for one ASAP.↢_______.-._____.~*☾*~._____.-._______↣
So, how to write interesting and realistic jobs?
- Repeating word: RESEARCH!
- Go on jobhunt/LinkedIn/the local newspaper and open the vacancies!
There are TONS of interesting jobs we never heard of!
(I bet you didn't know there's a job as a microphage laborant observant type two. Me neither... But it excists!)
- Start of with the clichè, then venture into the world of that job to see what kind of MUNDANE jobs are attached to it.
Make-up artist? How about the lackey that is hired by the employment agency to do the errands of buying the make-up which the make-up artists use?
CEO? Nah, make it the office worker in charge of answering E-mails from companies outside of the country to forward them to the sales departments.
Coffeeshop worker? You mean shelf stacker, because THAT is a relatable FIRST job of someone around teenager/college student stage.
- Think in degrees, before going to jobs. This also gives more background to your character. Did they study? If so, what and how much of their degree will they use? (Pro tip: 90% of adults don't do shit with their degree... It's just a piece of paper showing off your mental capacity and level of thinking... Don't stress about it)
And if they didn't go to college, then how did they begin without it? Because growing inside of a company is possible, but you have to start lower on the scale, have amazing skills or... they've chosen a job where there's a BIG need in workers and the company alsmost BEGS you to study whilst working on their expenses.
- Watch a lot of content about jobs.
NO Barista's don't make coffee ALL day! and NO, teachers don't GRADE ALL DAY! Most jobs have so much typical stuff to do which big media doesn't show. So, watching content is often the way to gain experiences and insight on work.
- Don't be afraid to use a "Dirty" job! Yes, less aestethic than your coffeeshop job, but much more relatable!
So go on, let them work as an office cleaner, a shelf stocker, administration desk worker or order pick-up hands on deck worker.
MAKE. THEM. RELATABLE!
- Speaking of 'Dirty' jobs. Wanna have them do sex work? Do your research, because depending on the country, there are ALOTTA rules and ALOT of different ways sex work can be described.
Byebye clichè stripper or escort >.> Hello sex scene advisor and featherplay content creator.
- Search up payment... Because then you can see how many jobs your broke ass main needs... Really...↢_______.-._____.~*☾*~._____.-._______↣
Writers confessions:
Well, no! There are no confessions here!I always had a good eye for work! As in; YOU NEED TO MAKE MONEY IN A REALISTIC AND SAFE WAY WITH ENOUGH BENEFITS AND FREE TIME TO HAVE A NICE BALANCED LIFE!
So yeah... I shiver with the idea of a irregulare paycheck... Or the idea of having a job not giving you paid off free-days... Or jobs not having retirementplans. Can't imagine!
But there's jobs like that and if that's how you work, that's great! Have a lollipop and be on your proud way. But not me. Na-ah, can't handle it.
What I can confess is that I had a gap year and took that oppurtunity to check out like... 80% of ALL Studies in my country...And I mean, not online; I went to as many as over a 30 open visit days at different colleges, universities etc... To check out all kind of studies there were to find out what was the right one for me.
And in the end... I chose something I saw myself work in, but more importaint; something I knew I was gonna finish in four years without taking out loans and such! So, somewhere with people like myself, a somewhat clear setup of what I would do there and a clear view of what future jobs I could get.
And let me tell you what... I am THE ONLY ONE out of 40+ students that:
1. finished within those 4 years
2. Immediately landed a job in the sector I studied for
3. Never left, because I enjoy the work. (And now I'm there for 10 years already! Wowie!)
>.> Okay, bragging much... But know I did a shittone of research before commiting to a job and HELL am I good at managing my finances for a reason! I like my mundane job :D
