perennial

you are prose
risen from laurel woodlands.
verses unseen beneath
the grooves of your bark.

your fortitude is inspiriting,
an everlasting evergreen—
like a rose under the april snow,
staying rooted with brilliant ease.

this place of viridian thickets
your realm, an ellipsis of time.
a monumental thing of royalty,
the reigning monarch of meadows
scattered with forget-me-nots.

whether the days be blighted or serene,
your needles of phthalo green
evermore faithful upon your boughs,
choreographed by the wind.

a king of eternities,
your silhouette of pyramids
opposing luminescence
of morning glory
and midnight sun.

to be envious of an evergreen,
to have a warm and exciting strength
within this cruel and unusual world
a fate of fortune—
destined to be nothing
but everything.

ageless and flourished,
ever green.
