As Daniel drove, we struggled to keep our focus, which caused us to sink through the seats every now and then. It was getting harder to stay solid, especially with the tension rising. Eventually, Daniel started to speed up—probably out of frustration or maybe just to get us to the bridge faster. But that's when it happened.Soph, who had been sitting in the back, suddenly lost her grip on her focus. With a sharp gasp, she sank right through the seat.
"Daniel, stop the car!" I yelled, panic filling my voice as I turned around.
We all looked back to see Soph on the road, desperately trying to get back up. But before we could react, the shadowy figure emerged from the darkness, moving faster than before. "Soph!" Elias screamed, reaching out through the back of the car as if that would help. The shadow man wrapped itself around Soph, pulling her into the inky darkness before we could even think of a way to help.
Daniel slammed on the brakes, the tires screeching on the empty road. We were all frozen for a moment, staring at the empty road where Soph had been, hearts racing and minds spiraling."What... what just happened?" Elias stammered, his usual joy gone, replaced with horror."We have to get her back," Daniel said, his knuckles white on the steering wheel. "Whatever that thing is, we can't leave her behind.""But how?" I asked, trying to push the fear down. "We don't even know what it is or where it's taking her."Daniel hesitated, but then he made a sharp turn, driving us back toward the shadowy figure's direction. "We're not leaving her behind. We'll find her, no matter what."The sense of dread deepened as the shadowy figure disappeared into the night, taking Soph with it. Whatever this creature was, it wasn't playing around anymore. And if we didn't figure out a way to stop it, we might all end up just like her.
As Daniel kept driving, a cold, suffocating silence fell over us. The darkness seemed thicker, as though it was swallowing everything around us. My mind raced, filled with fear and the image of Soph being dragged away by that shadowy figure. I couldn't stop thinking about the helpless look on her face as she disappeared into the night.
"We can't lose her," Elias said quietly, breaking the silence. It was strange hearing him sound so serious, his usual playful attitude completely gone.
"We won't," Daniel replied through gritted teeth, his eyes fixed ahead. "But we need to think this through. If that thing took Soph, it's not going to stop. It's after all of us."
"What is it even?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper. "A ghost like us? Something worse?"
Elias shook his head, eyes wide with fear. "It's more than just a ghost. I felt it when it was near—like the air got heavier, colder. It's like it feeds on fear or something. Whatever it is, it's stronger than us."
Daniel's jaw tightened. "We don't have time to be scared. We need to figure out where it's taking her and stop it. If we're all connected to the bridge, maybe that's where it's going. We have to find her before... before it's too late."
The car's headlights pierced the darkness, but it felt like they were barely cutting through the heavy night. The road ahead seemed endless, and even though we were racing toward the bridge, it felt like we were moving in slow motion.
Suddenly, the car's engine sputtered, and with a violent jerk, it came to a stop. "No, no, no!" Daniel slammed his fists against the wheel, frustration boiling over. "We're out of gas."
We were stranded.
Elias opened the door and stepped out, staring into the blackness that surrounded us. "We need to keep moving. That thing could have taken her anywhere by now."
"But what if it's close?" I said, my heart pounding. "We don't have the car anymore. We'll be completely exposed."
"Then we move fast," Daniel said, his face set with determination. "We stay focused and keep pushing forward. We have to find Soph."
We started walking down the road, the silence only broken by our hurried footsteps. Every sound felt amplified—the rustling of leaves, the distant howl of the wind. It was as though the world had shifted into some kind of nightmare, and we were the only ones left.
Elias paused, glancing around nervously. "Do you guys feel that?"
The air had suddenly gone cold, an unnatural chill creeping into our bones. I felt it too—a presence, something watching us, getting closer.
"It's here..." I whispered, my voice trembling.
In the distance, a shadow moved. It wasn't like before—this time it was slower, more deliberate. It knew we were vulnerable. It knew we were afraid.
"Run!" Daniel shouted.
We bolted off the road and into the nearby trees, our feet pounding against the ground as we raced through the forest. Branches whipped against our faces, the darkness swallowing us whole. My chest burned as I pushed forward, terrified that if I slowed down, the shadow would catch me.
Behind us, I could hear the faint whisper of something following—its presence wrapping around us like a thick fog.
"Don't stop!" Daniel urged. "We can't let it catch us."
But no matter how fast we ran, I could feel it getting closer. Its cold breath seemed to brush the back of my neck, and I knew it wouldn't be long before it reached us.
Just as we broke through a clearing, Elias stumbled, falling to the ground with a cry. "Help!"
I turned back, my heart in my throat. The shadow was closing in on him, its dark form swirling in the night.
Without thinking, I reached out, grabbing Elias's arm and yanking him to his feet. "Come on, we can't stop!"
We kept running, breathless and terrified, until we found ourselves at the edge of a cliff. The bridge was visible in the distance, looming like a ghostly reminder of our fate.
Daniel turned to face the approaching shadow, his fists clenched. "This is it. We make our stand here."
The shadow hovered at the edge of the clearing, not quite crossing the line into the open. It seemed to be waiting, watching. The air crackled with tension, and for a moment, I thought it might finally attack.
But then, without warning, the shadow retreated, fading into the night.
We were left standing there, hearts pounding, trying to make sense of what had just happened.
"Why didn't it...?" Elias started, but his voice trailed off.
Daniel shook his head. "It's playing with us. It knows we're heading for the bridge. And it's waiting for us there."
"We need to be ready," I said, my voice shaky but determined. "Whatever's waiting for us at the bridge... it's not going to let us go easily."
Daniel nodded, his expression grim. "We get Soph back, and we end this. One way or another."
The shadow may have let us go this time, but we all knew the next time it appeared, we wouldn't be so lucky.
