⚊ chapter one
Let me set the scene for you: it’s a perfect morning. The sun is shining, birds are chirping, and I’m in the front yard with my Minji. She’s laughing at my jokes (as she should), I’m showering her with kisses, and life is good.
But peace is an illusion, my friends. It all went downhill when that van rolled up.
I didn’t pay much attention at first. It was just some old, beat-up van pulling into the driveway of the empty house next door. The house had been vacant for years, and Minji once told me a family she was close to used to live there.
But who cares about ancient history when I’m busy being the perfect boyfriend?
The van honked.
Minji froze mid-laugh. I could see the gears turning in her head. When it honked again, her smile disappeared.
“What the hell is that?” she muttered, squinting at the source of her sudden irritation.
I shrugged, leaning against the porch rail. “Maybe someone finally bought the place?”
She ignored me, her eyes narrowing like a hawk zeroing in on prey. The van beeped a third time.
That was it. She snapped.
Minji, being Minji, didn’t hesitate. She stomped off barefoot, hair swinging, ready to unleash her fury on the poor soul in that van.
I didn’t stop her. Why would I? Watching her go full rage mode is one of life’s greatest joys. I smirked, crossing my arms as I waited for her to make someone cry.
The van door opened.
Out stepped a guy.
Not just any guy. No, this guy had dimples. Brown hair that somehow managed to look effortlessly perfect. And a face that screamed trouble.
My smirk faded. Alarm bells started ringing in my head.
Then it got worse.
“Maki?!” Minji shouted, her entire face lighting up like she’d just won the lottery.
I blinked. Who the hell is Maki?
Before I could process anything, Minji took off running toward him like one of those dramatic slow-motion scenes in a romance movie. You know the ones.
They hugged.
Then they started jumping around like hyperactive toddlers who’d just been handed a bag of sugar.
I stood there, dumbfounded. Was I…being replaced? By this guy?
Things escalated. Two more people climbed out of the van—an older couple who were clearly his parents. They saw Minji and immediately started fawning over her.
“Oh, Minji! Look at you! You’ve grown into such a beautiful young lady!” Mrs. Hirota gushed, pulling her into a hug.
Beautiful? Sure, they weren’t wrong, but why did they have to say it so enthusiastically?
