⚊ chapter three
By the time the weekend rolls around, Ni-ki and I are at our wits' end. We’ve tried everything short of locking them in a closet together until they sort it out. But just when I’m about to give up, Ni-ki comes up with an idea so ridiculous, it might actually work.
“What if we get them to play truth or dare?” he suggests.
I give him a look. “Are we in middle school?”
He grins. “Exactly. It’s so simple, it’s genius. Plus, with the right dare, we can force Jungwon to confess.”
I hate to admit it, but Ni-ki’s got a point. So that’s how we find ourselves at Chenle’s place that Saturday night, gathered in a circle with all our friends, a bottle of soda spinning in the middle.
It’s one of those nights where everything feels like it’s leading to something big, even if no one wants to say it out loud.
We’re all laughing, making jokes at each other’s expense, when the bottle finally slows down and lands on Jungwon.
For a second, he just stares at it, like maybe if he doesn’t move, it’ll magically point to someone else. But luck’s not on his side tonight. He hesitates, his eyes flicking to me and Ni-ki for some kind of guidance.
I give him a subtle nod, encouraging him to go for it.
“Dare,” he says finally, his voice barely above a whisper, and I can see the anxiety written all over his face.
“Perfect,” Ni-ki says with a smirk, eyes gleaming with mischief. “I dare you to tell Jillian how you really feel.”
The room instantly goes dead silent, every single person zeroing in on Jungwon. Except for Jillian, who isn’t even there—because her kitten, Wonwon, had just come home from the vet, and she’d excused herself earlier, saying she needed to check on him the whole night.
The realization hits me, and I almost burst out laughing at how the universe has its own twisted sense of humor.
Jungwon’s eyes widen in panic, and I can practically see the gears in his head turning as he realizes that Jillian isn’t even present.
“Uh… she’s not here,” he stammers, glancing around like maybe she’ll magically appear.
Ni-ki just shrugs, unbothered. “Doesn’t matter. You can practice for when she is.”
But before Jungwon can even get his bearings, Dongpyo, who’s been waiting for his moment to strike, jumps in, grinning like the cat that caught the canary.
“Hold up, Ni-ki,” he says, waving a hand dramatically. “I think there’s something else we all need to hear first.”
Everyone looks at Dongpyo in confusion, including Ni-ki, who raises an eyebrow, clearly wondering what Dongpyo’s up to.
Dongpyo turns to Jungwon, his grin widening. “Jungwon, before you do that, I dare you to tell us what you really think of Minji right now. After all, you’re stuck between the devil and the deep blue sea with these two forcing your hand.”
The whole room bursts into laughter, Ni-ki included, though he tries to cover it up with a cough. I can’t help but smirk, watching as the tables suddenly turn on me and Ni-ki.
Jungwon, caught off guard, blinks rapidly, trying to process what just happened.
He looks at me and Ni-ki, then back at the group. Finally, he lets out a long sigh and speaks up, his voice gaining a little confidence.
“Honestly? If you two weren’t my friends, I’d swear you’re conspiring to kidnap me and lock me in a room until I confess to Jillian,” he admits, half-joking but also half-serious. “You guys have no chill. At all. It’s like living with a pair of overenthusiastic cupids who can’t take a hint.”
