Valerie woke up the next morning with a sense of determination. She knew she had to find a way to pursue her dreams despite her father’s oppressive nature. The hidden library had given her a glimpse of what was possible, and she wasn’t going to let that go.

As Valerie entered the kitchen, she found her mother, Eleanor, already preparing breakfast. The atmosphere was tense, and the silence was only broken by the clinking of dishes.

“Good morning, Mother,” Valerie greeted softly.

Eleanor looked up, her eyes filled with concern. “Good morning, dear. Did you sleep well?”

Valerie nodded, though the truth was far from it. “Yes, I did. Thank you.”

Just then, Marcus entered the kitchen, his presence casting a shadow over the room. He glanced at Valerie but said nothing, his expression still sour from the previous night.

After breakfast, Valerie decided to visit the hidden library again. She needed to speak with Mr. Thompson, the librarian, about her plans. She slipped out of the house quietly, hoping to avoid another confrontation with her father.

The hidden library was a sanctuary for Valerie. As she entered, the familiar scent of old books and the quiet ambiance immediately put her at ease. Mr. Thompson was there, organizing some books on a high shelf.

“Good morning, Mr. Thompson,” Valerie greeted.

Mr. Thompson turned and smiled warmly. “Good morning, Valerie. How are you today?”

Valerie sighed. “I’m determined, but it’s hard. My father… he’s so controlling. He doesn’t understand my dreams.”

Mr. Thompson nodded sympathetically. “It’s never easy to break free from such constraints, but remember, knowledge is your greatest ally. Have you thought about how you might pursue your studies?”

Valerie’s mind was a whirlwind of thoughts. She wanted to study psychology, to understand the human mind and help others, but her father’s dominating nature made it seem impossible. She felt torn between her duty to her family and her desire for a better future.

“I have,” Valerie admitted. “But I don’t know where to start. I need resources, guidance… and a way to convince my father.”

Mr. Thompson handed her a book on the basics of psychology. “Start with this. It’s a small step, but every journey begins with one. And as for your father, perhaps you can find a way to show him the value of your dreams.”

Back at home, Eleanor was dealing with her own inner conflicts. She loved her daughter dearly and wanted to support her, but she was also afraid of Marcus’s wrath. She knew that standing up to him would bring more trouble, but she couldn’t bear to see Valerie’s spirit crushed.

Eleanor decided to have a quiet word with Marcus. She found him in the living room, reading the newspaper.

“Marcus, we need to talk,” she began cautiously.

Marcus rudely said, "What! "

Eleanor got scared and whispered in a comforting way, "It's about Valerie. I think she is interested to study psychology. We should send her for further studies."

Marcus's face contorted into a sneer. "You think you know better than me, Eleanor? You, a woman? You're nothing but a housewife. Your place is here, looking after me and the children."

Eleanor's heart pounded in her chest. She had expected a harsh response, but this was worse than she had imagined. She took a deep breath and met his gaze with unwavering determination.

"Marcus, I'm not asking as a wife. I'm asking as a mother. Valerie is our daughter. She deserves a chance to be happy. She deserves to pursue her dreams."

Marcus's anger flared. "Dreams? You're talking about dreams? This family doesn't have time for dreams. We have to survive."

Eleanor's voice trembled slightly. "We can survive and still give Valerie a chance. She's not a child anymore. She's a young woman with a bright future ahead of her."

Marcus scoffed. "A bright future? A girl like her? She's lucky to have a roof over her head. The only future she'll have is as a wife and mother."

Eleanor's eyes filled with tears. She knew she had to do something, but she wasn't sure what.

Eleanor's thoughts
On one hand, she was terrified of Marcus's wrath. His words had cut deep, reminding her of her subservient role in the family.

She had always been afraid to challenge him, to stand up for what she believed in. The thought of facing his anger again filled her with dread.

Yet, on the other hand, her love for Valerie was unwavering. She saw the spark in her daughter's eyes. She couldn't bear to see Valerie's dreams crushed by her father's oppressive nature.

Eleanor knew that she had to do something, no matter the cost.

The fear and love within her were like two opposing forces, pulling her in different directions.

Fear whispered in her ear, cautioning her against defying Marcus.

Love, however, urged her to fight for her daughter's happiness.

Eleanor felt trapped, torn between her own safety and Valerie's well-being.

With a churning river of thoughts,  she turned to leave the room. But she got struck in fear as she heard Marcus muttering to himself about finding a suitable husband for Valerie.

Meanwhile at the library, Valerie was deep in thought as she read the book Mr. Thompson had given her. She was fascinated by the concepts of psychology, and she felt a growing sense of purpose.

She knew she had to find a way to convince her father to let her pursue her studies.

As she walked home from the library, Valerie's mind raced. She had to come up with a plan.

Perhaps she could offer to help with the household chores in exchange for her father's support. Or maybe she could try to find a part-time job to earn money for college.

Whatever she did, Valerie knew she had to be persistent. She was determined to break free from her father's oppressive grip and build a better future for herself.

How was the chapter? Can Valerie convince his father, Marcus?
