Chapter 1: It's Only A Bet

"Simulation loading. Sly and Ze VS Nova and Spoon. Difficulty: Medium." The computer program announced as the four hyped themselves.

A good two-hundred feet separated the pairs. They both were determined, even if it was only practice. In the control room, Kootra and Danz were gritting their teeth, ready for the match to begin while Seamus kept to himself in the corner. He observed from afar like usually.

Sly turned to his partner. "I've got money on this match man, so leave Nova to me."

"No problem," Ze replied. "I still haven't got Spoon back for stealing my pizza the other day."

Sly gave a little laugh but stayed intense as the buzzer rang. Digital pillars rose in the neon blue environment. They were all different heights, making them an even bigger obstacle. Being the acrobat he was, Sly immediately jumped to higher ground.

They each had their own abilities, making the team that much more powerful. It made interesting friendly competition as well. Ze had an imagination like no other, and could summon deadly waves of energy, almost like the Green Lantern. Spoon was a shape shifter, and his favorite was a horse. No one knew why because horses can't do shit, but somehow it won battles.

Spoon charged Ze as a bull, but when the charge was dodged he quickly changed to a monkey as not to run into the wall. The little spider monkey took advantage of the landscape and jumped back and forth making it impossible for Ze to get a clean shot.

"Spoon you're an asshole!" He yelled as he tried to hit the flying primate.

"Fine, butt." Spoon replied and mid-air changed to a hippo so as he fell he sent Ze flying back from impact.

Meanwhile, Nova charged up his bat with energy that was produced by his rage filled veins. He swung at the base of the column Sly had been camping on, making the pillar come crashing down. Sly just barely grabbed the ledge of another platform as he fell. He did a backflip off of the pillar and landed behind Nova.

Pulling out his sword, he went for a literal back stab but Nova caught it and turned around in time to block the blow with his steel bat. Normally a silver sword should cut straight through steel, but the bat was, and always is, charged with anger.

Nova threw Sly back, making him fall on his ass. It looked like a secured victory for him, but he suddenly was hit by Ze's body. It seemed Spoon wasn't looking where exactly he was tossing Ze.

"Ze, get your ass off me!" Nova shouted.

Ze jumped up and as he did he sent four daggers of energy towards Spoon. The now human was caught off guard and the daggers grabbed the edge of his clothes, pining him to the wall.

Nova was still reeling from his blindsiding hit. Sly took it as an advantage to cheep shot him. He sent Nova into a pillar, securing the victory.

Sly cheered as the simulation closed. Danz voice echoed through the chamber as he spoke to them from the control room.

"Congrats you two. Now let's go eat dinner."

The four downstairs began to walk to the mess hall, as did the three in the control room.

"Ain't no congrats about it." Seamus complained. "I owe him fifteen bucks now."

"Yeah, well I owe him twenty." Nova said as he joined them in the hall.

He rubbed the back of his neck. Seamus grinned as they walked.

"Damn, Ze needs to lose weight. It hurt like hell when he flew into me."

"It's all muscle." Their victorious friend chimed in as he greeted them.

"How'd you get up here so fast?" Seamus questioned.

"I'm magic! Plus I took the back stairwell." He smiled.

Sly walked up grinning. "You two owe me money now." He giggled.

"Ugh," Nova sighed. "Don't remind me!"

The two pulled out their wallets and handed over the cash, making Sly dance. "Suck it bitches! I'm thirty-five dollars richer!"

As he was distracted in a victory dance, Seamus snatched back his money. "I payed you in full. There isn't a thing in the rules about thieving it back."

Nova liked the idea and copied it. Sly stood there dumbfounded for a second then began to complain.

"Assholes!" He snapped unhappily.

"Oh get over it! It's just a dumb bet!" Nova said, trying to calm his friend.

"Yeah Sly. We can go out to eat tomorrow and I'll pay for ya to make it up to you." Seamus smiled.

Sly walked away pouting making Nova and Seamus feel a little awkward.

"What's wrong with him?" Seamus whispered to Ze as Nova went to join the others.

"I don't know." Ze replied. "He was so serious in the match today and he hasn't been brushing stuff off like normal. The only time he gets like this is when there's trouble in paradise."

"Natalie?"

"No," He grinned shaking his head. "Not GF, BFF; Immortal."

"Oh." Seamus gave an understanding sigh.

They dropped the subject and went over to eat with the others. Nova, Ze, Spoon, and Seamus sat at one table, Danz and Kootra at another, and Sly sat alone in the back corner. He was checking his phone every three minutes and bouncing his leg unable to have an appetite.

While the three in front of him joked around, Seamus watched Sly being depressed and pissed all at once. He really couldn't be that mad about the bet. There was something else. Seamus barely ever ate anyways, so he abandoned his food and friends to go talk to the upset fox.

Sly kept his head down but still knew Seamus was there. Seamus sighed seeing he was being ignored. He took a seat hoping the stares of the others would stop burning in his back.

"Hey, I'm sorry about the whole bet thing." Seamus started, knowing it wasn't the reason.

It took Sly a while. He just sat there, but as Seamus started to leave he replied.

"It's not the bet. I don't give a shit about that." He mumbled.

"What is it then?" Seamus asked sitting back down.

Sly sighed and opened his mouth to answer, but as he brought his eyes up he realized the others watching.

"I'll tell you later. Actually I was kinda hoping to go home early today, so you wanna come over?"

"Sure." Seamus replied. "Just tell me when you're gonna leave."

Sly gave a slight grin. "I will."
