"For the love of god, I just want math to be over with" I complained to my friend Addie.
"You want math to be over? Tough luck." She said loudly. "If you wanted it to be over so badly, Derin, You should have switched your math class to an earlier time" She smirked.
"That wouldn't mean anything! I would still have to take it. When am I ever gonna use this stuff anyway?" I say with a hard sigh.
"Never know dude" She said and continued with her Geometry work. Stupid triangles, what are they ever gonna do for me? Save me from a burning building or a bomb? I grumble and continue my work. When the bell finally rang, you bet that I beat it out the door with her. Every Friday, we go to my house to play this cool game we found called Monster Dungeon Supreme. We were both video game experts but always struggled to beat this one level. We have been trying for weeks and I think it is driving not only me insane, but Addie as well.
As we get on the bus, we talk about upcoming events like the spring fling and our field trip. Field trips have always been a serious matter to me. One, I get to miss school (especially geometry) and two, it's hella fun. As we keep chatting, I check my phone and see our bus running late, nothing too bad though.
When we finally get off the bus, we bolt to my bedroom and boot up the game.
"We are going to beat this level whether it likes it or not." Addie declares and I see her eyes flare up with pure anger.
"You have anger issues" I say with a snarky tone.
"And you're a bitch" She snaps back
"Ouch"
"Shut it" She says as the game finally loads. As she tries to get through the level, I make small talk, which she hates.
"Are you staying over tonight?"
"Yeah, now shut up" She says
"I wonder what my mom is gonna make"
"Don't know, don't care" She fails the level and gives me a look that says "I am this close to throwing you out of a window." She sighs and goes to sit on my bed, giving me a chance to play the game. As I try over and over again (failing every time) it becomes more tiring. It's like the more I do, the better I may be, but the more my pride and love for this video game deteriorates. I groan and go to join Addie on my bed. As I sit down, I check my phone and watch videos while Addie texts her parents then later does the same as me.
As the sun sets, I banish myself to go sleep in my chair since my mom always comes into our bedroom during the night and if she finds Addie on the floor or in the chair, guess who gets yelled at? Me.
As I nestle myself into the padded chair, I soon fall asleep right after Addie does. Before I doze off, I think about all the things that have happened the last past week. I had like six tests, I couldn't beat that level, my baby sister threw a toy at my head, and we had a half day. I know, pretty random stuff but I don't really have anything else to think about now do I? I'm in eighth grade, give me a break.
My dreams consist of walking down the quiet streets of my suburban neighborhood. I usually just head to the nearest gas station to get a few snacks for myself. As I pass each streetlight, I notice they get dimmer every time. As I enter the store, I hear a familiar ding that gives me a sense of reassurance. As I open the fridges in the store, I hear a beeping noise, which was weird since I haven't heard that sound in the store before. As I go through each small aisle full of delicious treats, the beeping won't stop. As I hold a bag of Skittles in my hand, I approach the sound. It's one of those gambling machines. Mom told me to stay away from them. I approach it and when I finally touch it, a roar comes out of it, making me wake up from my dream.
As I awaken in a cold sweat, I hear the faint beeping again. I look over, terrified, and see my computer turned on.
"I thought I turned that off" I mumble as I drift from side to side all the way over to the computer. I go to turn the computer off and suddenly I hear that roar again from my dream and a flashing light. I am completely blinded and soon knocked out again from the overstimulation of my senses.
I wake up again, feeling a sharp point against the side of my face, recognizing it to be the feeling of grass. I get up exhausted and scared. I sit up and look around, my vision still quite foggy. I see a lush forest around me. The thing that really throws me off is that it's not even dark. I stand up wearily as I hold onto the tree next to me. I steady myself and take deep breaths before walking cautiously around the forest. I feel the firm ground under my feet and the breeze through my dark brown hair. The environment is the only thing that I find familiar.
Suddenly, I hear sinister giggles and a yelp for help. I get on the move and rush over to the scene where I see two little blue balls with talons and wings, they're eyes red. It's almost like they resemble a bat in some way. They scratch at something else. I stand behind the tree and observe further.
I now see what they are picking on. It is this orange cat with a puff of yellow fur on its thin yet already furry chest. The cat stands on two feet which is rather peculiar and weird to me but then again, so are those bats. Its green eyes are full of tears as it protects its head which has this sun like symbol on it. The poor thing is getting beaten and I don't stand for it.
I see a large stick and grab it in my hand, I take a deep breath before shouting
"Leave that little guy alone!" I run over to them and swing at the bats. They scurry away with snarky smiles. I drop the stick and go to comfort and ask the cat-like creature if it was okay. I kneel down in front of it and take its furry paws into my hands as I look into its tearful eyes. "Are you alright?" I ask. The cat nods its head, but I can sense it doesn't really want to smile.
"Go away you filthy human!" I hear behind me. I turn around and see a black cat with dark blue fur on its chest. It was like a darker version of the cat I just saved. The cat comes running up to me. "Gattling Punch!" It yells as it scratches my eye. I yell in agony and cover my face. I hear footsteps running away from me and let my face go. I was blinded but my forehead and cheek were bleeding. The cat also got a part of my shirt too. I ripped the section off and applied it to my eye. I stay there sitting on the ground and soon crawl to a tree. I lay there.
"What was that all about?" I say hoarsely. I close my eyes and begin to drift off to sleep, hoping this injury would soon recover. As my mind calmed, I saw a white blur. I was floating in the air as my name was called out multiple times by this hollow yet desperate voice.
A static image appeared in front of me. I could tell it was someone who looked human but it was all a blur.
"Who are you and what do you want?" I yell.
"You are Derin...right?" The voice says uncertainty.
"Yes I am. What do you want?" I say as I hear a soft chuckle. The image is then blocked with this kind of device.
"This is a fusion loader. Now repeat your name."
"Derin...Derin Mivorino..." I say. This fusion loader turns a dark blue.
"Good" The voice says. "Use this to find your digimon partner."
"Digimon partner? What's that? And, what's a digimon?" I say and hear another small chuckle emit from the blur.
"You will find that all out later, child." The voice says. "I must go now though. But do me one quick favor"
"What is it..?" I ask cautiously.
"Please help me. My name is Gravimon. Find me in th-" It cuts off. I'm left with the device. I wake up in a panic and realize that it is light outside already. I stand up and feel the leftover sting in my eye. I take a step and feel something under my foot. I gaze down to see the device I had seen in my dreams. I picked it up frantically and held it close.
