Heaven Awot was a seven-year-old Ethiopian girl who was raped and murdered by her mother's landlord.
Heaven and her sister were raised by their single mother, Abekyelesh Adeba, in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia. All three lived in a house rented by Getnet Baye and his wife. The wife was either a relative or a family friend of Abekyelesh. The couple had three children of their own, so whenever Abekyelesh left for work (she is a nurse), she would leave her two daughters in the care of Getnet's wife.
On the day of the event, as always, Abekyelesh left her two daughters in the care of Getnet's wife and went to work. However, on that day, his wife also had an appointment, so she left the five children with her husband, Getnet.
And Getnet had been waiting for this.
The children were playing outside their house, and that's when Getnet isolated Heaven from the group and took her somewhere where they were alone.

Getnet brutally raped seven-year-old Heaven. He poured either cement or soil into her mouth to prevent her from screaming. Once he was done raping the child, he murdered her by strangling her.
The attack had caused Heaven to lose a lot of blood, and to clean that up, Getnet poured bleach over her tiny body. He also mutilated her body, making it look like she had fallen from somewhere higher up and died by accident.
Getnut threw Heaven in front of her house, making it look like she had fallen from the roof.
Heaven's mother was then informed. She rushed home, only to find her daughter's lifeless body brutally lying at the doorsteps of their house.
Police were called, and Getnut was arrested. He had been planning to rape little Heaven for a long time.
He was arrested. Yet, he fled from the police station in Bahir Dar, where he was detained. Local Amhara militias battling the army had broken into the police station to free their fellow fighters who were held there - and so, Getnet Baye was also free.
Abekyelesh and her daughter had to go into hiding. They feared for their own safety because Genet was searching for them with a knife. He wanted to kill Heaven's family.
Thankfully, Getnet was arrested again. However, it took the police about a month to track Getnet.
He was sentenced to 25 years in prison, but his lawyers are trying to get his sentence appealed, and sadly that might even happen.
Heaven's mother said in an interview that it was very hard for her to stand in court with Heaven's rapist and murderer. Genet kept on insulting all and terrorizing the woman.

"If our children can't be safe in our homes, where else can we go?" She said. "Should we stop work and spend all our time with them? How can we feed them?"
Heaven was a bright angel, an innocent little girl who had her whole life in front of her. And due to the disgusting desire of a grown adult, she lost it all. Can you imagine how much pain that little angel had to go through?
How can someone hurt an innocent child like that?
"I have lost my Heaven... I am lifeless." - Heaven's mother.
