Chapter 12

Cherry's p.o.v

I woke up to the sound of a gunshot. I immediately got onto my feet and ran out of the house frantically, only to see that it was Ash using a gun on some glass bottles.

''Relax, Cherry. It's just Ash''. Ibe patted my head and walked out of the door towards Ash. ''You mean Eji?'', I replied. Ibe opened his eyes wide and started running towards the two boys. I watched Ibe dismiss Eji while he and Ash continued to talk. It looked like they were in the middle of an argument when Ash fired a gun at another bottle.

''What is that about?'', I asked Eji, who was walking towards the house.

''I think Ibe-san didn't like the idea of me using a gun''

''Oh''

...

We were all having lunch at the restaurant. Ash got up after he was done and turned around to leave when his father called out to him.

''Why did you come back? You shouldn't be here''

Ash just ignored him and walked out. I called out to him and was going to follow him out of the door when I heard Eji yell, ''Can't you be nicer to him? Isn't he your SON?!''

I turned to see a very frustrated Eji, who slammed his hands on the table while his father read a newspaper. Max joined the argument too, which made Ash's father sigh.

''Do you guys want a drink?''

He looked at me and I shook my head. I think I knew where this conversation was heading. So I walked out of the house and ran after Ash, who was miles away already. Man, he walks fast.

''HEY ASH! WAIT UP'', I yell while running up to him.

He stopped in his tracks and sat down on the grass. I caught up to him and fell to the ground. ''You didn't have to run, you know?''

''Mhmm'', I replied while closing my eyes.

''What are they talking about?''

I opened my eyes to see Ash lying down beside me, He was looking up at the sky. The sky was all lit up as the sun was setting. ''Eji called your father out for being mean to you. I think they were getting into a small argument'', I lied.

It seemed like his father would explain to the boys why he was harsh on Ash. I believe it's because of what happened to Ash when he was younger. It was the reason he ran away and ended up with Golzine.

We lay there on the grass and watched the sky grow dark as time passed. ''We should probably get going'', Ash says while getting onto his feet and wiping the dry grass off him. He held out a hand to me and as I grabbed it, we heard gunshots.

With our hands still clasped, we looked at each other in terror, then sprinted towards the diner. ''DO YOU THINK IT'S GOLZINE'S MEN?'', I ask while running.

''It probably is'', he yelled back while pulling his gun out of his waistband, ''WHERE IS THE GUN I GAVE YOU?!!''

''I left it at the house, and I don't even have a knife with me, goddamn it!''

''Then stay behind me. Don't you dare go in'', he whispers when we get to the diner.

We hide behind the walls of the diner, waiting for Golzine's men to make a move. Ash started to give me orders when someone screamed out his name. We both turn our heads to look at Eji. Shorter immediately covered his mouth and pushed Eji and himself to the ground.

A few gunshots were heard as the window near me shattered into pieces.

''You hear us, Ash Lynx? Throw your gun and come in here if you want to see them alive!''

I looked at Ash and shook my head. He would be killed if he went in without a gun. He glared at me and hissed, ''Stay here. Don't you DARE follow me, Cherry. I will kill you''.

With that, he threw his gun into the diner and walked in with his hands behind his head. ''Don't touch them! I will do what you say''

''You're such a fool'', I heard one of Golzine's men say, ''You really thought that you could beat Papa Dino?''

I turned away from the shattered window when I heard footsteps. Max and Ibe were running to a truck parked in front of the diner.

''What are you guys doing?!'', I whispered and yelled at them.

Everything happened too quickly. Max turned the headlights on, a few gunshots were fired and a scream was heard. Did someone get shot?

I cursed at Max while running to the front door of the diner.

Jennifer, Ash's stepmom, was on the floor, lying in a pool of her own blood. I put a hand over my mouth, horrified. Quickly, I kneeled beside her and tried to stop the bleeding. I didn't know what to do. My eyes were tearing up as I tried to stop her from bleeding. She had been shot multiple times, and there was no way she could survive.

I heard a few more gunshots and Ash yelling for his Dad, but I stayed in the same position. I was frozen.

''Hey, you okay?''

Shorter put a hand on my shoulder and kneeled beside me.

''She's...dead'', I whisper.

''I know. It's okay, Red'', he started to say as I shook my head furiously with tears in my eyes. He pulled me towards his chest as I sobbed silently. I looked over Shorter's shoulder and saw that his Dad had been shot as well.

I felt so bad for Ash. He lost Griffin...and now his parents?

Shorter rubbed my back, trying to calm me down while everyone else tried coming up with a plan.

From a distance, we could hear sirens. The police were here.

''Ash, give me your gun''

Ash's dad wiped the gun against his shirt, trying to get the fingerprints off it. He told us to stage the scene and make it look like an argument gone bad.

Ash and I made eye contact from across the room. My heart ached for him. But, nothing could be done. We needed to leave immediately if we wanted to continue our fight against Golzine.

Ash wasn't able to stay for his parent's final moments. He wasn't able to say goodbye. Max had to drag him out of the diner.

We got into the truck and started driving away. Where to?

I don't know

But what I do know, is that too many people have suffered. We're doing this for them. For Griffin. For Ash's parents.

And most importantly...
