"San, you gotta talk to me at some point. I can't keep kissing your ass," Braylen pleaded, setting a bag of her favorite snacks on the counter.

Braylen was cold to pretty much everyone else, but when it came to his baby sister, he had a soft spot. Even though they were only a couple of months apart, she was his only sibling, and he'd always been protective of her.

Braylen and Santana were what you'd call ghetto twins. Their dad had gotten both of their moms pregnant around the same time, so they ended up being close in age. Despite their anger at their baby daddy, both women made sure the kids had a strong bond growing up.

"Braylen, I'm still not talking to you. I'm mad," Santana pouted, though she still rummaged through the bag, pulling out a pack of Hot Fries.

"You're talking right now, though," Braylen pointed out, furrowing his brows as he started to laugh, which only deepened her frown.

"Not funny, Bray. You were mean as hell to that girl, and you know it."

"Who? Oh, that emo girl? I know y'all ain't still trippin' off that," he said, walking toward his room, clearly trying to end the conversation. He didn't care much, considering he didn't even know the girl.

"Yes, because you need to apologize to her. You were rude as hell, and you probably hurt her damn feelings. What if someone talked to me the way you talked to her?"

"I'd beat their ass, and you know that," he replied, starting to see where everyone was coming from.

Braylen was incredibly overprotective of his sister. He took pride in making sure she was well taken care of.

"Okay then, Bray, you need to apologize. She seems really cool, and she won't be my friend until you apologize."

"Man, alright, send me shawty's number," he replied, rubbing his hand down his face.

"YAY! Okay!" Santana exclaimed, running out of the room.

*Ding ding*

Braylen scrolled through his messages and finally clicked on Seoni's contact. He wasn't about to do the most-a quick apology and that was it.

Or so he thought.

"Aye, shawty, I'm sorry," he texted.

"Who the hell is this?" she replied.

"Dis Tana's brother, Braylen. I ain't 'bout to say allat extra shit. My bad for hurtin' yo feelings type shit."

"Lol, you definitely didn't hurt my feelings, but I appreciate it, I guess."

"Fasho. Unblock my sister though, or you not gon' have a phone."

"Boy, bye," she replied, sending a laughing emoji.

Hell, she laughing at what's so funny, he thought to himself.

He wasn't sure if he was apologizing for his sister's sake or because it was the right thing to do. But he felt good about it.

A couple of days later...

Being that it was now homecoming, Seoni actually wanted to go out. Even though she was only at that party for a short time, she enjoyed the part where she got cute and went out.

A lot of students weren't going to class because it was homecoming week, but Seoni had no choice.

Sitting in class waiting for her professor, she scrolled through Instagram stories, looking for one in particular-Braylen's.

It wasn't anything serious. After he apologized, he would text her small stuff here and there. She didn't know why, but she didn't mind. Eventually, he followed her on Instagram.

Seoni couldn't deny that he was handsome, but he was also rude. She didn't play that shit. She felt like her man was supposed to be mean to the other girls, not to her.

Her thoughts were interrupted when her professor walked in.

"Really, Brown? It's homecoming week. I just knew no one was coming, so I was only here to grade papers," Professor L said, arching his eyebrows.

"Well, sir, I'm here to get a degree. The partying can come after."

"Well, Brown, I wish I had more ambitious, strong students like you. But unfortunately, class is canceled today. Go enjoy yourself."

Sighing, Seoni packed up her bag. Unlike everyone else, she didn't have any plans. Her only plan today was to go to class.

As she made her way to her car, she decided to just grab something to eat and head home. Once in the car, she played her favorite song at the moment, "Stranger" by Jhené Aiko.

While singing along, her music suddenly stopped. Looking down at her Apple CarPlay, she saw an incoming FaceTime from Braylen.

"Hello?"

"Wassup, lil one. Why can't I see your face?"

"Oh, so you wanna see my face? I'm driving, though." Seoni was glad he couldn't see her at that moment; she had the biggest grin ever.

"Mmcht, don't gas yourself. It's just that when I call people, I expect to see their face. I could've just called you regularly, dummy," he said, chuckling.

"Anyway, why your lil ugly ass not at that party?"

"Party? It's 2 in the afternoon. Who the hell having a party and why?"

"It's a day party, lil girl," he replied in a duh tone.

"The fuck, boy, stop playing with me. But I see you ain't there either, so what do you want?"

"Na, jit, I ask the questions 'round here. But I'm tryna see you. Where you gon' be in the next 30?"

"SEE ME!? What you wanna see me for? Last time I checked, you ain't trust me."

Seoni honestly didn't know why he wanted to see her. They weren't even friends and barely texted. Sure, they'd been having small talk, but that was about it.

"Aye, I'm not about to play wit' yo ass. I know you gon' be at home. Ion even know why I asked your big head ass. Send the addy, or don't. Hell, I'll find it regardless," he laughed, then hung up.

Seoni just shook her head and sent him her address.

He really did confuse her. She didn't like being confused about anything. He was such a challenge, but she wasn't the toxic type like he was.

Or so she thought.
