Seoni sat in the hospital room, fidgeting with her hoodie while glancing over at Braylen lying in bed.
He was alive but hurt, and it hit her harder than she expected. It reminded her of how quickly things could change,
Braylen opened his eyes a bit, and she moved closer. "Hey," she said softly.
"Hey baby," he mumbled, trying to smile. "It's not as bad as it looks, niggas didn't do their job."
She raised an eyebrow, a little grin forming. "Shit, I can't tell. You barely made it."
He turned his head to look at her, giving her a playful glare. "Yo ass got jokes, huh?"
She shrugged, "Maybe a little."
He chuckled, shaking his head. "Keep playing. Soon as I'm outta here imma fuck up that walk."

After a while, Seoni got up to leave, giving his family some space. She walked down the hall, needing air, and ended up near the vending machine, staring at the snacks.
Just as, she heard footsteps behind her. Turning, she saw Braylen's dad.
"Seoni," he said quietly. "I found something about your mom's case."
"What? What did you find?"
"I know it's a lot with everything going on, but... we need to talk about it soon."
"Ok thats fine. Just tell me when."
He nodded, a faint smile on his face. "Ok I will have my assistant reach out to you in a week or so. Take it easy."
As he walked away, Seoni's just stood there thinking. This was just something else for her to worry about .

After days in the hospital, Seoni finally made her way out, beyond tired. She'd been there nonstop—showering, sleeping, barely leaving Braylen's side.
All she wanted now was her own bed, a real shower, and a chance to catch up on her mock trial practice. The presentation was coming up, and she was already behind.
She walked to her car, rubbing her eyes. Just as she got close, she spotted a man across the street, dressed in a black suit, staring her down.
A bus rolled by, blocking her view for a second, and when it passed, he was gone. She chuckled, shaking her head.
