"We shall!" Ruth said as we got up to leave. We walked to the bible study class in silence but not an awkward one a comfortable one.
What she said made a lot of sense and so did what Tim said. I have always thought that something was missing in my life. This could be why....I don't know.
Anyway, Ruth broke the silence by talking about her younger brother.
"His name's Callum an' he's 14 years auld." She explained.
"Really? I have a sister called Amy. She is quite the character." I said with a chuckle.
That made Ruth smile and she asked how so.
"One day, she was supposed to go to Sarah's house, but instead, she decided to explore the neighbourhood. She climbed fences, dodged angry geese, and squeezed through hedges that were way too small for her." I paused when Ruth started to chuckle.
"We were freaking out! But then, we heard laughter. We found Amy playing tag in the park, covered in dirt and making new friends. She thought it was the best day ever!" I finished and by the time I did Ruth was laughing her head off and I joined her.
We had talked all the way to the bible study group. It was held in a meeting room in the unis theology department.
We saw Tim and Jaewon at the door greeting someone at the door. Jaewon noticed us and she quickly excused her self and ran over to us.
"Hi Ruth! I didn't know you signed up? Hi Ben, anyway..." She continued talking merely acknowledging my presence so I walked over to Tim.
"Howdy Ben! What brings you here?" Tim said pulling me into a side hug.
"Well Ruth told me something's about the bible and God and you know what? I think I want to learn more about Jesus." I said shrugging my shoulders.
Tim looked at me for a while in disbelief.
"Are ya really sure it ain't 'bout Ruth, or do you actually wanna hear more 'bout Jesus?" Tim asked looking me straight in the eye.
I nodded and mumbled "Dumb-" But as per usual Tim cut me off
"Alright, partner, you gotta clean up that mouth of yours if you're serious about this."
"Ok I'm sorry." I said mentally kicking myself.
What a great start to this thing!
Anyway I really do want to know if God is what I'm missing in life.
"How was your date with Jaewon then?" I asked nudging his shoulder playfully.
"It was mighty fine! We swung by the café where Ruth works, then headed over to a park to do some Bible study. Now we're right here!" Tim said excitedly.
"Cool! Dude I'm so happy for you." I said fist bumping Tim.
He nodded hand was going to say something but the bible study was about to begin.
The door opened and Jim walked in.
"Jim's a pastor?!" I whispered to Tim as we sat next to Jaewon and Ruth.
"take a wild guess partner." Tim mumbled under his breath.
"Good evening, everyone!"
"Good Evening!" Everyone called back.
As we gather for our first Bible study of the term, I want us to take a moment to think about how we're beginning this new season. The start of a term always brings a mix of anticipation, goals, and, yes, sometimes a bit of nervousness. It's a time when many of us are setting out on new paths, whether in our studies, work, or personal lives." He said as people hummed and said amen in approval.
Everyone pulled out bibles, Notepads , highlighters and pens and I had nothing. Thankfully I did have my phone so I downloaded a bible app quickly to use that for now.
Tim looked at me for a moment and shook his head.
"Ya know ya could use my backup Bible, don't ya?
"You have a backup?" I asked in shock.
He just chuckled and handed me the bible. I took it and said quick 'thanks'.
"Let's turn to Matthew 7:24-27." Jim said and all you could hear for the next few seconds were the swooshes from the thin paper from the bibles everyone had turning . "Here, Jesus gives us the parable of the wise and foolish builders. One builder constructs his house on the rock, and when the storms hit, the house stands firm. The other builds on sand, and his house falls when the same storms come." Jim explained as people hummed and nodded while highlighting and jotting things down.
He read a passage from Matthew 7:24 to 27.
"Any questions?" Jim asked while scanning the room.
A woman behind me raised her hand
"What does it mean to build my life on the rock of Christ?" she asked
" Building your life on the rock of Christ means making Jesus the foundation of everything you do. It's about trusting His teachings and following His example in your daily life." Jim paused and looked at her to make sure she understood.
" In Matthew 7:24-27, Jesus contrasts two builders—one who builds on rock and another on sand. The builder on the rock represents someone who hears Jesus' words and puts them into practice." He continued
"When we make Christ our foundation, we're rooted in something unshakeable, no matter what life throws at us." He explained.
"Whould anyone like to say a prayer to wrap up?"
Ruth raised her hand and Jim gestured for her to begin.
"Dear heavenly father. I Thank you for this message and for Jim your servant who taught us this message. I ask that you help us build a strong foundation through your son Jesus. In the mighty name of jesus christ Amen." She prayed.
Everyone replied "AMEN!" in unison.
"Go in peace my friends!" Jim said as people got ready to leave."
Jaewon, Tim , Ruth and I walked out as a group.
"That was a powerful message." Ruth said hugging herself.
"Yeah it was." I said putting my hands in my pockets.
"Off, It's b-baltic." Ruth said shivering.
I took of my jacket and gave it to her.
"Naw, I c-cannae take yer j-jacket." I said shaking her hands.
"You'll get a cold, please?" I said putting my jacket over her shoulders.
"Ok, Fine but I owe you one." She said
"No you don't." I said adjusting the jacket.
Ruth tugged at the jacket, threating to take it off.
"OK, OK, Fine you owe me." I said chuckling at the playfulness of this situation
"Good!" she said finally zipping up the jacket.
Jaewon and Tim were already ahead of us, chatting about only Goodness knows what.
"Come on Ruth! Catch up." Jaewon called making Ruth grumble.
She is just adorable.
