Chapter 3- A Game of Pool

I get home and notice the packet of parsnip seeds that Mayor Lewis had left for me. If I get these planted then i could have time for a quick nap before I had to meet Sam. Determinedly I grab the packet, a hoe and a shovel and set out to work in the spot I had cleared that morning. After reading the directions on the packet (I had never planted anything before), I dug 15 little holes and planted the seeds. I watered each one for good measure before heading inside for a much needed nap.

Beep Beep Beep The sound of horns and a car alarm were so loud. All I could smell was smoke and something else that was bitter and acrid. Everything was fear and confusion. I could hear people shouting and a siren in the distance....

Beep Beep Beep I woke up in a cold sweat to my alarm going off. That dream always followed me at the worst of times. I tried to shake it off while I got ready to meet up with same. I put on some eyeliner to match my black mood and brushed my long hair out. Time to go make a good first impression with Sam's friends I guess. I thought as I headed out, the sound of the sirens still haunting me.

I took a deep breath before entering the saloon, letting the cool night air clear my head. I walked up to the bar and gave Gus a smile before ordering my usual, a gin and tonic. While walking back into the arcade part of the saloon I notice a grim looking man standing in the corner, staring sullenly into his drink. I wonder what his deal is, he looks like he's had an even harder day than me. He actually reminds me a lot of how I used to feel back in the city. He looks up, sees me staring and glares. I quickly look away and hurry into the back room. Before I enter I can already hear Sam's voice, it sounds like he's complaining about something.

When I walk in Sam stops mid sentence and yells "Maeve! I'm glad you're here. Maybe you can be the one who finally beats this guys ass." He gestures at a boy in a dark hoodie who has pale skin, black hair and eyes so dark that they seem to absorb all of the light in the room. He was absolutely beautiful. "Fat chance." He smirks, looking you over. "Maeve! It's so nice to meet you! My name's Abigail. I'm so happy that there's finally another girl here, I get so bored sitting around while these two argue." I laugh and look over at the tiny purple-haired girl. You can already tell that you'll get along. "I'm glad to be here, especially if I can show these guys a thing or two about how to really play pool." You grin and look over at the two boys. Sam is laughing but the other one is just looking at you with that same smirk. "And you are?" I say to him, already knowing the answer. He had to be Sam's bandmate that he had told you about earlier. But you wanted to force it out of him. "What's it to you?" He responds rather coldly. Geez, what an ass. But after the day you had and the terrible dream, you were in no mood for moodiness. I raise an eyebrow, "Well I just like to know the name of the person whose ass I'm going to kick." This makes Sam and Abigail laugh loudly. Sebastian looks a little taken aback, as if not expecting that answer. "Sebastian." He says, "and we'll see." He regains his composure and takes his place with his pool cue. "Well Sebastian, my name is Maeve, and I get to play winner!" I say before sitting on the couch with Abigail and taking another drink of my gin and tonic. We watch the boys and chat about our favorite movies and bands before getting up to get another round. When we get back, the boys are still at it with Sam clearly losing and not being all too graceful about it. "Seb, why can't you go easy on me, just once. You always get to win." Sam groans. Sebastian is sitting there with a smirk, "Where would the fun in that be?" He asks before sinking the winning shot. You chuckle before chalking your own cue while Sebastian gets the balls ready for the next game. "Ladies first." you sing, lining up to break. He just grunts at you. Actually grunts. You'll give him something to grunt about you think before breaking the triangle of balls. "I'm Stripes" You say. He doesn't say anything to acknowledge you, he just lines up and continues to play. As the game goes on, all of you start getting pretty tipsy, with Sam shouting anytime you start to pull ahead and cursing when Sebastian catches up. I notice that throughout the game, Sebastian kept running his fingers through his hair. That's kind of hot you think before mentally shaking yourself. Abigail does a good job of side commentary the whole time, cracking everyone up. At the end it was a close game, but Sebastian managed to beat you by just one. Dang, he's actually better at this than I thought. I'm going to have to pay better attention next time. Or drink less. It didn't help that I could feel his dark yes watching me the whole time, it felt like he could see through me to my core. "Don't worry Maeve. Nobody can beat that guy, he shouldn't even legally be allowed to play." Sebastian just rolls his eyes at his friend. I just chuckle.

"Well, I should be getting home. I have lots of work still to do on the farm and I need to be up way earlier than I want to be."

"Yeah, we all need to get going. Can I walk you home?" Sam asks hopefully. I wave him off, I have been looking forward to the walk alone.

"That's okay, I can make my way there. Luckily the path is petty straightforward." I smile and say goodnight, everyone saying goodbye except Sebastian, who keeps watching me coolly.

I walk home through the dark, enjoying the cool breeze and the pleasant tingle of alcohol in my veins. This was actually a pretty pleasant ending to what I thought was going to be a terrible day. I think I could get used to this town in time.
