Chapter 2- Here I Am

I wake up to my first day on the farm. It takes me a minute to remember where I am and it's hard to get out of bed, all of the tasks ahead of me feel heavy and I'm not really sure where to start. I sigh and think, coffee. I can at least start with coffee. It takes me awhile to figure out the fireplace and how to brew hot water without burning myself, but once I do I have a hot steaming mug ready for me with the bitter familiar fragrance instantly calming my nerves. I carry it around with me as I take stock of everything I have left to me in the cabin. I notice that grandpa's old tools are still here, a little rusted but still in good enough condition for me to use for now. I smile fondly, remembering how he he used to use them around the farm. The memory helps to harden my resolve and I take them outside to start getting to work.

After hours of pulling up weeds and breaking rocks, I finally have a nice clear patch of good soil by the pond to start planting some crops. I smile at my handiwork and check the time. It was already 11 AM, I had been doing this for over four hours! I moan and stretch all of my aching joints, I was used to working long hours for Joja, but that was all sitting and typing, this was a different kind of work. I check my phone and notice two missed calls from my dad. I doubt I'll be getting back to him anytime soon, even if I wanted to. Groaning I head inside to make myself presentable before heading into town. I needed something to eat and that meant seeing people.

I took a quick shower because I'm sure I didn't smell all too great after hours of hard labor and put on a plain black tshirt and some jeans. I didn't want to make myself stand out too much since I knew I would already be a person of interest by being new in town. I brushed my hair and self consciously noticed the streak of silver running through my light blonde hair. A lot of people my age already had some gray in their hair from the long hours and stress from working, but out here I knew that it might be an odd difference. Ugh. I shake off the thought and start to head into the village. It's easy to let your worries slip away with the beautiful green grass and wildflowers blowing gently in the breeze. I even see a few birds and a rabbit that I accidentally startled hop from the bushes. It truly was another world out here.

The town square is calm, not a person in sight. Thank goodness. I head to the Saloon to see what I can get for lunch, hoping it's just as dead as the square. Walking in I'm greeted by a jolly looking man with a curled mustache and a blue-haired girl who is washing dishes behind him. 'Hiya!" He booms, "My name's Gus and I own and run this saloon. You must be the new girl that took over Mariposa Farm, I was wondering when I would see you!"

"Hi, I am." I smile awkwardly. "I was hoping that I could get some lunch here, the farm takes up a lot of energy and I hear that this is the best food in town."

"The only food in town." the blue-haired girl laughs. "Hi, I'm Emily! I work here so come in and visit when you can. It's nice to meet you! Know it seems dead right now but this place really comes alive at night." I smile at Emily, she seems like a genuinely nice person, if not a bit eccentric in her clothing choices. "Thank you, i'll have to drop by again later then." Especially since there will be alcohol. I could definitely use a beer after today. "Here's a menu, let me know what I can get going for you." Gus says, handing you a small (and sticky) menu. You immediately notice your comfort meal. "Spaghetti please!" I order excitedly, this is the first non-frozen meal you have gotten to have in a long time. I have some of the dreaded small talk with Emily whileI wait for my food and learn that she lives with her sister and likes to make clothing in her free time. That explains her unique clothes, they look cute on her and you can't help but think that she's very talented. Gus sets the spaghetti down in front of me and I practically inhale the first few bites, my eyes tearing up from the homemade flavors. "This is so goood." You say around another forkful. Hey chuckle and leave you to your food.

Once I'm done I head outside and start walking around, enjoying the calm and homey vibe of the village. I can see a blond boy around my age standing under a tree, talking to himself. Walking over, I notice that he's playing a handheld videogame and swearing at it. I smile to myself as I hear the sound of his character dying and his frustrated groan. "What a shame." You say, "I always die around there too." The boy looks up at you confused and then smiles. He's really cute, with an open face and bright eyes. "I can't get past this level no matter how gard I try!" He laughs, "I'm Sam, I bet you're that new farmer that everyone's talking about! I don't get to see new people around her that much. Except tourist season." Geez, I'm not surprised that everyone already knows about me in a town his small but it kind of sucks for everyone to be talking about me. "Yup, that me. My name's Maeve. It's nice to see someone my age around here, especially one with good taste in games." His eyes light up.

"I also play in a band with my friend Sebastian, you should stop by sometime and listen to us play! We still need someone to play the drums, we keep asking our friend Abigail but she refuses to do it." He rolls his eyes. "Do you play?"

"No, I never could pick up the drums, but I do play the violin and sing a little." I smile nervously. I used to sing a lot at coffee houses back in Zuzu but it had been years and I had never played the violin for anyone, it had always been something just for me.

"Wow, violin? Thats so cool! I don't know how we could add a violin but we definitely could use a singer!" He looked at her nervously, but clearly excited. "Maybe i'll come by sometime and try it out, see if I fit." I say, more to appease him than because I want to. He's really cute, in a golden retriever sort of way you think to yourself. "Sweet! Hey! My friends and I meet at the saloon on Friday nights to play pool, you should come hang out with us later." That perks you up, you always enjoyed playing pool to help blow off some steam after work when you had the energy. "Now that's something I could definitely get behind. What time should I get there?"

"We usually meet around 7 to get drinks and start playing. I hope to see you there!" His eyes keep glancing back at his game and I can tell he's anxious to keep playing. "I'll see you then" I laugh before heading back home. Home. It's nice to start thinking of it that way. Your small apartment in Zuzu had never truly felt like home.
