Chapter 4-Sebastian's POV

You had heard that there was a new farmer in town. Everyone was talking about it, Robin seemed especially excited about her. She couldn't stop talking about how nice and pretty she was. She also mentioned that she seemed a little uncomfortable about meeting so many new people. He couldn't blame her, the people of Pelican Town could be a bit much, it was one reason he spent so much time hiding out in the basement. Sam had already met her and hadn't stopped texting him about it since "Dude, I just met the new farmer! She games!" "Seb, she said she's going to come meet us at pool tonight. BE NICE." Sebastian rolled his eyes, it wasn't that he couldn't be nice, it just seemed that everything that came out of his mouth didn't come across the way he wanted it to. He could only really be himself around Sam and Abigail, everyone else already had their own ideas about who he was and he wasn't about to correct them. He went to his computer and started finishing up his last programming project for the day before having to leave. Looking at the familiar code and hearing the tap of the keyboard always helped to calm his nerves and make him feel normal again.

Once it hit 6:30 Sebastian stretched with a groan and closed his eyes. I guess it's about time to start heading over to the saloon, ugh, he thought. Usually this was his favorite day of the week but he couldn't stop feeling on edge about a new person being added to his usual group. Getting up he went over to the small mirror in his bathroom and tried unsuccessfully to pat his black hair down and make it presentable. It always seemed to be puffed up from constantly running his fingers through it. A nervous habit that he couldn't seem to get rid of. It was better than his old one of biting his nails down. He sighed before trying one last time, then grabbed his familiar dark hoodie and started making his way to the Stardrop Saloon. On his way there he sparked up a cigarette, hoping it would calm him down, but he still managed to suck down two before even making it to the front door.

I walk up to the counter and grab a beer from Gus before heading to the safety of the back room. When you walk in Sam and Abby are already there, chatting about their latest game of Journey of the Prairie King. "Yo, Seb! Are you ready to finally see yourself beaten by the king?" He grins, pointing at himself. You just laugh, throughout your years of playing pool with Sam he hasn't been able to win once. "I don't see that happening anytime soon, are you forgetting who you're up against?" I smirk and start chalking my cue while he sets the balls into a triangle. "I dunno man, I feel pretty confident today. Maybe the pretty new farmer will be my god luck charm." Sebastian didn't respond right away, he had forgotten that they were expecting someone else to show up. "Whatever man, let's just get this game going. I'll even let you break."

After playing for a while, I start to relax, getting into the rhythm of our usual Friday nights.

"Seb this just isn't fair anymo- Maeve! I'm glad you're here. Maybe you can be the one who finally beats this guy's ass." Sam gestures over to you, "Fat chance" You mutter then smirk before looking up at the new arrival. You immediately feel all of the energy in the room shift and you clam up. She was super tiny with skin almost as pale as yours with a slight sunburn. There was a beautiful silver streak running through her blonde hair. I wonder how she got that, or did she do it herself? You thought absentmindedly while Abigail went off introducing herself and going on about something you didn't care to pay attention to. "And you are?" You blink, the new farmer is standing in front of you with a glint in her eyes. "What's it to you?" I responded gruffly. Crap, crap, crap. I didn't mean to sound like a total asshole. Why can't I ever just say something normal. You run your fingers through your hair nervously. She raises an eyebrow at you. "Well I just like to know the name of the person whose ass I'm going to kick." Wow, she has some fire in her. This girl is really interesting.

"Sebastian." He says, clearing his throat. "And we'll see." That was a normalish answer...I think. Ugh why won't my brain work right. "Well Sebastian, my name is Maeve, and I get to play winner!" Maeve. That name sounded like velvet and it fit her so well. She went to go sit with Abigail while I went back to effortlessly beating Sam for the millionth time. Luckily it didn't take a lot of thought because Sebastian couldn't stop his mind from wandering over to where the farmer sat with Abigail, laughing with a voice like a bell. Maybe having a new person to play could be great. If he could get his head out of his ass. Towards the end of the game Maeve and Abigail get up to get another round for the four of us. "Hey, Seb." I look up and see a surprisingly serious look on Sam's face. "I know that it's hard but I like Maeve a lot, so could you really try to be nice? I want her to stick around." I raise my eyebrows at him. Did I really come across that bad? I do another pass through my hair. "Yeah man, sorry. You know how I get, i'll try harder." I don't know what that means exactly, but I will. We keep playing normally until the girls get back with our drinks. Maeve hands Sam his beer and Abigail sets mine down next to me, giving me a pat on the shoulder. "Seb, why can't you go easy on me, just once. You always get to win." Sam groans. I smirk at him, forgetting for a second that we have someone new watching. "Where would the fun in that be?" I line up my last shot and sink the last ball for an easy victory. Maeve and Abigail clap while Sam huffs way in mock anger. It feels nice to have her clap for me, it makes me feel like I really did do something cool.

I can see Maeve getting up from the corner of my eye and start setting the balls up for a new game, trying to concentrate on that and nothing else. "Ladies first." she practically sings, going to line up her shot to break. You don't know what to say so you just grunt at her. Oh Yoba, did I actually just grunt? Grunt? I'm pretty sure this isn't what Sam meant by 'try harder'. You try to keep a controlled expression as you watch her break and the first ball goes in. "I'm Stripes." she announces with a smile. You don't want to grunt again so you settle for silence, going in for your first shot. As the game continues you notice that she gets these cute little lines in between her eyebrows anytime she concentrates. You can't help but want to place your finger there and smooth them out, maybe even kiss the spot. Oh no where are these thoughts coming from. Yeah she's cute and not afraid to be snarky but there's no way that she would go for you. She would want someone like Sam. Easygoing and fun to be around. Someone who can actually y'know, talk. Not some awkward loner who just sits in his basement all day and just grunts at her. You try to push these thoughts away and concentrate on the game, she's actually really good and it's taking some effort not to let her get the upper hand. By the end I do manage to win, with just one of her striped balls being left. She doesn't seem to be upset about it, laughing it off with Sam and Abigail. "Don't worry Maeve. Nobody can beat that guy, he shouldn't even legally be allowed to play." Sam says. I just roll my eyes at him, little does he know how much effort it took to actually win that one.

"Well, I should be getting home. I have lots of work still to do on the farm and I need to be up way earlier than I want to be." Maeve says, finishing the rest of her drink. You can see Sam perking up a bit and you can't help but feel disappointed.. You had just started feeling semi-comfortable in her presence.

"Yeah, we all need to get going. Can I walk you home?" Sam asks hopefully. You feel a twist of jealousy, you wish that you could have the guts to ask her the same thing. But to your surprise she actually turned him down which made you feel happy, then confused, then bad. Why do I feel happy that she declined my best friend? Shouldn't I be rooting him on? Some friend I am. We all make our way outside and she waves goodbye. Abigail and Sam both yell goodbyes to her but all I can do is watch as she retreats further into the night, the silver streak in her hair catching the moonlight.
